 Hello Friends,

This is my humble and ardent request. Please go through the mail and everyone subscribed to the group, please respond.

I am sure that no one of us forgot the brutal acts of Pakistan army during Kargil war. This is an effort to do something about it.

This has been in my mind right from the days of Kargil. But I was not sure of what to do and whom to approach. Now that someone has bring this topic, why don't we take this up as the first initiative under Likeminded Groups forum?

I will contact Late Major Padmapani Acharya's parents and two days back I get to know a Major who quit the army after serving 8 years. I will talk to them.

Let us plan a big event to do something about this. Let us discuss more on this.

I couldn't control my tears and anger after reading about the brutal acts again. In fact every now and then I think of doing something for our Defence people (all the three wings - Air Force, Navy and Armed Forces).

Please respond. Please discuss with the respective groups and let me know when we can meet to discuss about the action that we should take.

Please go through the article that I wrote then:

Please spend 5 minutes............it's a humble request

Dear Sir/Madam
,

SPARE 5-MINUTES from ur busy schedule .PLEASE !!!

Lt. Saurabh Kalia of 4 JAT Regiment of the Indian Army laid down his
life at the young age of 22 for the nation while guarding the
frontiers at Kargil.
His parents, indeed the Indian Army and nation itself,
lost a dedicated, honest and brave son.
He was the first officer to detect and inform about
Pakistani intrusion. Pakistan captured him and his patrol party of 5
brave
men alive on May 15, 1999 from the Indian side of LOC.
They were kept in captivity for three weeks and
subjected to unprecedented
brutal torture, evident from their bodies handed over
by Pakistan Army on June 9, 1999.
The Pakistanis indulged in dastardly acts of inflicting burns on these Indian officers with cigarettes, piercing their ears with hot rods, removing their eyes before puncturing them and breaking most of the bones and teeth.
They even chopped off various limbs and private organs of the Indian
soldiers besides inflicting unimaginable physical and mental torture.

After 22 days of torture, the brave soldiers were ultimately shot dead. A detailed post-mortem report is with the Indian Army. Pakistan dared to humiliate India this way flouting all international norms.
They proved the extent to which they can degrade humanity. However, the Indian soldiers did not break while undergoing all this unimaginable barbarism, which speaks volumes of their patriotism, grit, determination, tenacity and valour - something all of India should be proud of.
Sacrificing oneself for the nation is an honour every soldier would be proud of, but no parent, army or nation can accept what happened to these brave sons of India . I am afraid every parent may think twice to send their child in the armed forces if we all fall short of our duty in safeguarding the PRISONERS OF WAR AND LET THEM MEET THE FATE OF LT.SAURABH KALIA.
It may also send a demoralising signal to the army personnel fighting for the Nation that our POWs in Pak cannot be taken care of. It is a matter of shame and disgust that most of Indian Human Rights Organisations by and large, showed apathy in this matter.

Through this humble submission, may I appeal to all
the civilized people irrespective of colour, caste, region, religion and political lineage to stir their conscience and rise to take this as a NATIONAL ISSUE !!!
International Human Rights Organizations must be approached to expose and pressure Pakistan to identify, book and punish all those who perpetrated this heinous crime to our men in uniform.
If Pakistan is allowed to go unpunished in this case, we can only imagine the consequences.
Below is the list of 5 other soldiers who preferred to
die for the country rather than open their mouths in front of enemy -

Prasanthi & All,

Let me speak for myself here. I think adding our name and forwarding this to about x people in my address book is armchair patriotism at its best. And that does not help anyone or also influence anyone. If we have to do something - we should first HAVE facts. What action is required and why ?

Pakistan forces have done the worst thing they could have. We need to have facts of what Indian govt did after receiving the bodies on 9th June, 1999. If we have to organise people action - it cannot be done via emails in personal boxes - but thru more organized action.

... see "Save Naznin" campaign on Orkut.
Naznin was a rape victim in Iran and while defending herself she killed her attacker. As per Iranian law - she was being hanged for the local law had 'an eye for an eye' kind of justice system. Later being pressurised by all international media / website / press - the judicial system changed the verdict on day of hanging instead asking for a large amount to be paid in some time as 'blood money' to family and suspended hanging of naaznin for some time. Money poured in from all over and she was freed within a couple of weeks!  check out the story and what she is doing now at the link below

The reason I state above is to impress the right way of action. Definitely not through private emails - we will achieve nothing.

Hello Ajit,

Thank you so much for a very quick reply. Yes. This mail is for action
only. To discuss and see what we can do.

This is my idea:

1. First mobilize people (for this we use mails)
2. Talk to Dr. N.K. Kalia (I already tried but the call is not allowed
from my cell phone. I will try tonight from any STD booth. Meanwhile I
will also check BharatRakshak.com and other Army related Web sites).
3. As you mentioned, we will see if we can file an RTI on this. Though
it is related to defence it is not any confidential information that
shouldn't be shared with the public.
4. Once we can unite people in Hyderabad, we will do the same in all
the districts in AP. One day we will appeal to our people to form a
human chain or something as such, to gain National Attention.
---- For this we will take the help of Army Associations
and people like Late Major Padmapani Acharya's family members and
people who served in Army and quit. (Major Shiv Kiran of Ryze. I gave
a message to him. I will talk to him tonight).
5. This we will repeat in all states.

But we shouldn't stop until the Parliament replies and take necessary
action.

This may seem to ideal but if we all want it genuinely, we can
definitely do. When there is a will, there is a way. Please support.

Thank you.

with regards,
Prasanthi.

Also, this is a cause everyone feels for. As we, common public, didn't
do much, this has not been taken up seriously. But if we all take it
up seriously and do a program like Human Chain or anything, (this is
only one idea. May be we can get more ideas), we will succeed
definitely.

How to mobilize people?

1. Members of our groups.
2. Members of the groups where we are members.
3. Our respective companies.

We can definitely unite. But for that we should persist till we reach
the goal.

I will do all the co-ordination that is required and update everyone
of us. But I need the support and co-operation of all of you.

I await eagerly for the response from everyone of you.

Friends,

I am very very happy and glad to share that there has been a great
breakthrough in our efforts.

The following is the list of people whom I contacted today.

1. Vimala Acharya
2. Colonel Gowri Shakar
3. Dr. N.K. Kalia
4. Major Shiv Kiran

Vimala Acharya:
I actually didn't talk anything in particular with Vimala garu. I only
told her that I want to talk to her and if she can give an appointment
this weekend that would be fine. She told me that she is not yet sure
of their weekend schedule and she has taken my number. But I told her
that I only will call her this saturday morning.

Colonel Gowri Shankar
He is a retired colonel. I have taken his personal e-mail. I will be
meeting him this thursday at 9:30 AM. Meanwhile I will mail him on
what I want to discuss.

Dr. N.K. Kalia
This is indeed a very emotional call. I never imagined and thought
that I could speak to him. I spoke with him around 8:30 pm. It seems
he is very old and his voice is shivering. He is very much moved and
he felt very happy to know that someone from Hyderabad (a different
state) called and said that they are with him. He noted down my number
and gave his email id as well. I told him like all of us are with him
and we want to know how we can be of help to him. He said that he will
give us the details. I mailed him and may be he can reply tomorrow as
I mailed him very late (only a few min back). If I do not get a reply,
I will talk to him again on thursday evening or so.

Major Shiv Kiran
He supported us. He told that first we need to collect information and
our approach is right. He also told that it is better if we think on
how to help the respective families. Though Army do help, it is not
sufficient. He said that Military games are being held in Hyderabad on
Oct 12th (may be 16th too. I forgot in my happiness) and all the top
brass would attend and we can approach them if at all we can get clear
data by that time. In the sense, the details from Dr. N.K. Kalia.

Also this morning, Murthy garu from Marg Foundation send this mail.
-------------------------------------------
I am close to Honorable Minister of State for defence Sri M M Pallam
Raju, Govt of India . Pls let us know if you need any information or
help if we can do something together.
-------------------------------------------

Yesterday as I browsed through Bharat-rakshak.com, I mailed to one
Gurmeet Kanwal. He responded immediately though he is not particularly
interested in this effort.
----------------------------------------------
First Reply:
Dear Prasanthi (if I may),

Thanx for your mail. It is a good idea to honour Indian Army soldiers.
I am sure you will find a lot of support among our countrymen and
women. But, do make it 'armed forces' instead of only the army.

Perhaps you could team up with other like-minded websites like
defenceindia.com. Many others are there too. I would be happy to pass
on my published articles for you to uplink, giving due acknowledgement
to sources where these were first published.

Warm regards,
Gurmeet

P.S. Which interview did you see on bharat rakshak? please send me a
copy or give me a link to the page. Thanx.

hears, however measured or far away. -- Thoreau

Second Reply:
Thanx. I have written two books on the Kargil conflict and sympathise
with the plight of the families. However, I am an analyst of strategic
level issues and stay away from such stories. As such, I have no
further info to add to what you have read. However, we do need to
honour the memory of those who have died fighting for India. Cheers!

------------------------------------------------
Note: Gurmeet ji actually mailed his numbers too. I didn't post that
here as this is a public group.

This is the update for today.

This is the update for today.

I met Colonel Gauri Shankar and he asked me few questions on, what
does that we want.

1. Compensation
2. Recognition
3. Retribution

He said that all the defence personnel are heavily insured and the
martyrs get more benefits. So on the money front, there might not be
an issue. As this is a very well-known case, may be they would have
got the money. If that is not so, we can support him.

Recognition, it is very very bad in India. Here only political leaders
and cricketers are heroes. But in other countries war heroes are real
heroes.

Retribution we cannot do. We cannot go on war with Pakistan for this
issue.

What is that Dr. Kalia is seeking? What does he want? If something is
pending from govt. or his petitions ignore etc.,

He also asked how do you know him and what is that you want to get? I
was like surprised on why is he asking being a Major. I replied like I
do not know them in person. I could speak to him as I got the number.
What I get is satisfaction and I love and respect my soldiers. So I
want to fight for justice. He replied like, Good. I wanted to listen
to your reply.

In India, people will think on what is the benefit these people get.
You will be asked such questions. He shared one of his experiences.
He has spent his personal money Rs. 1.5 lakh to set up a water plant
in Malkapur, Nalgonda Dt. (It is another big issue. People of Nalgonda
dt. are the victims of Chlorine and Flouride) Later the govt.
contributed another 1.5 lakh rupees for this plant. The sarpanch asked
colonel 'saab, aap ko kyaa miltaa ye karne se'.

I replied to him like we cannot get back the soldiers and may be we
can give money (which the govt. might have given) and may be
felicitating those families. This is just a reaction. What is our
action? What is our action to handle this kind of cases? If we keep
quiet, they will repeat the same.

(In fact, I remember reading the similar torture on Indian soldiers
patrolling on Bangla borders. I can never forget the name of the
Officer, Major Fazlur Rehman. This is after one or two years of the
Kargil incident.)

He said that we can file an RTI and we can pursue with different
forums like Ex-servicemen and all. And also we can write to particular
regiment where Lt. Kaliya served and can get the details of the other
soldiers as well.

What is most crucial now is the response from Dr. Kalia.

After meeting the Colonel, I went to an STD booth and spoke with Dr.
Kalia. He said that he received my mail and as he went out of station,
he couldn't reply. He will mail me with all the details by this
evening.

He told that the issue has to be taken up by Ministry of External
Affairs and even Prime Minister, Army Chief and other higher officials
assured of justice but no breakthrough yet. It seems he is fighting
for human rights issue here leave alone Geneva declaration. His voice
is shivering and I couldn't understand what he is trying to say.

He again thanked all of us for our support and when I said that he
shouldn't thank us but we should thank him for his son. He told that
Saurav is not his son but he is the son of the country. When he is
saying those words I could feel the sense of pride in his voice.

He also responded like
Chaitanya. Here only political leaders and cricketers are heroes. But
in other countries war heroes are real heroes. He also mentioned the
deaths of two Majors. One is Major K.P. Vinay of Hyderabad and one
more is from other states it seems.

What is our

We all have to work together. We have to wait till we get the details
from Dr. Kalia. Once I get the details, I will forward them to Colonel
Gauri Shankar and also Major Shiv Kiran. Based on their suggestions,
we can decide the next course of action.

Hello Friends,

Please go through:
http://www.geocities.com/siafdu/kalia.html

Captain Saurabh Kalia

Born in Palampur district in the Kangra Valley of Himachal Pradesh,
Captain Saurabh Kalia was brilliant in academics and effortlessly
secured scholarships throughout his schooling years. After completing
his graduation in May 1997, Saurabh was selected in the Indian
Military Academy, Dehradun in August 1997, through the Combined
Defence Services and was commissioned on December 12, 1998.

Lt. Saurabh was posted with the 4 JAT Regiment (Infantry) in the
Kargil Sector. In the first fortnight of May 1999, he went out for
Patrol Duty three times to check the infiltration in the Kaksar area
of Kargil. Lt. Saurabh was hailed as the First Officer to give
information of the large-scale intrusion of the Pakistan Army and
infilitrators in the area.

After the intrusion was detected in area, his Commanding Officer
deputed a slightly older Junior Officer to check the strategic Bajrang
Post. Lt. Saurabh, however, volunteered to go there himself and went
in place of the deputed officer. Here, the troops were fired upon by
the enemy. These brave Indian soldiers kept fighting as reinforcements
couldn't reach in the day, any movement in the daylight would come
under the direct enemy fire.

The Indian troops ran out of ammunition, their signal instrument went
out of order and finally they got encircled by about 200 Pakistan
soldiers and were captured alive, before the reinforcement reached at
that height.

No trace of this entire patrol was left and Skardu Radio of Pakistan
reported that Lt. Saurabh Kalia and his five men were captured alive.
They were in their captivity for over twenty-two (May 15,1999 to June
6-7, 1999) days and subjected to unprecedented brutal torture as

evident from their bodies handed over by Pakistan Army on June 9,1999.

They did not break while undergoing this unlimited barbarism. This

speaks volumes of their patriotism, grit, determination, tenacity and

valour and the whole nation is proud of them.

The enemy indulged in the most heinous act of burning their bodies
with cigarettes, piercing ear-drums with hot rods, removing eyes,
chopping off various limbs and organs of these soldiers besides
inflicting all sorts of physical and mental tortures before shooting
them down. Lt. Saurabh Kalia's skull was fractured and most of the
bones and teeth broken. He had a bullet injury in the temple
indicating that he was finally shot dead.

Defence Minister George Fernandes paying homage to the mortal remains
of the six soldiers.

History testifies that all great souls suffer. The enemy violated all
laws by capturing the Indian troops alive and failed to inform the
Indian Army about their POW status. The six Indian men in uniform were
subjected to unprecedented brutal torture that violated the Geneva
Convention to which both India & Pakistan are signatories.

"Maa, Tum Dekhna Ek Din Aisa Kaam Kar Jaunga Ki Saari Dunia Mein Mera
Naam Hoga" -- mother, you will see one day I will do such a deed that
the whole world will acknowledge that. At Bareilly (JAT Regiment
Centre) Lt. Saurabh Kalia had said, "I am proud that I have joined 4
JAT and one day 4 JAT would be proud that Saurabh Kalia joined this
regiment."

Lt. Saurabh Kalia at the 'Piping ceremony', where the parents dedicate
their son to the nation.

The last time Lt. Saurabh rang up his home on April 30, 1999 to
congratulate his younger brother Vaibhav on his 20th birthday. He had
promised to return home before June 29, 1999 to celebrate his 23rd
birthday with his parents and his dear brother. A true Indian soldier,
Lt. Saurabh kept his promise, only he returned in a coffin.

The family including his parents did not have the opportunity to see
their dear son in the olive green uniform of the Indian Army. His dead
body arrived even before his first salary cheque was cleared. Lt.
Saurabh Kalia's anguished brother had not met the uniformed-brother
since he was commissioned in December 98, expect for brief one-hour
meeting at a crowded railway station.

Destiny played a cruel joke on this great believer of Lord Bajrang
Bali (Hanuman), Lt. Saurabh was captured at the Bajrang Post and laid
down his life in the "Operation Vijay", the name of his mother Vijay
Kalia.

Vaibhav, Vijay and Dr Narender with Saurabh's photos

"The birthday gift I wanted was that we celebrate his birthday
jointly. He came well in advance. But in a coffin", said Vaibhav
Kalia. "His death does not hurt us. A soldier is meant to kill or get
killed. But Saurabh was murdered by Pakistanis who tortured him for 21
days," he added. Vaibhav identified the body "by the eyebrow...there
was little else left." Saurabh's mother Vijay Kalia grieves quietly
but breaks down when talking about the signs of torture on the body.
Saurabh's father Dr Narender Kalia made an appeal, through a letter to
the editor of a daily, to the public to condemn the Pakistan act of
torturing and killing prisoners of war.

Showing a pile of supportive letters and over a lakh of signatures he
has received from all parts of the world, Vaibhav says, "Though
Saurabh is gone, now all the army soldiers are like Saurabh to us. We
must expose (Pakistan) for what they are and put a full stop to that."

On June 12, 1999, Thousands of people, who had assembled at Palampur
for the cremation of Lt Saurabh Kalia, bid a tearful farewell to the
valiant officer. A five-hour delay in the arrival of the coffin did
not deter anyone from braving the scorching heat.

The body of Saurabh Kalia was flown in from Delhi by an Indian Air
Force chopper and was received by senior Army officers, the civil
authorities and senior politicians at the Army helipad. ``Well done,
my son. You have done your job. May every home produce a son like you
so that the enemies dare not touch the territorial sanctity of our
country,'' said Vijay Kalia as soon as the coffin was taken out off
the helicopter. The body was accompanied by Major Sudhir Mohan Kalia,
Lt Saurabh Kalia's uncle, who is serving in the mechanized infantry.

The body of the Army officer was then taken in a procession from Holta
to Pragati Maidan via the residence of the Kalias(where the religious
rites were performed) in Tika Sughar. Army pall bearers led by Col
Sarat Sharma, carried the coffin as hundreds of mourners stood on both
sides of the road to salute the hero. People showered flowers on the
coffin of Lt Kalia as it passed through the town to be taken to the
cremation ground. The procession included a convoy of vehicles led by
hundreds of scooter-borne youths of Palampur. Cries of ``Saurabh Kalia
amar rahe'' rent the sky.

The body, draped in the tri-colour, was taken to the cremation ground.
It seemed as if the entire town had assembled to pay respect to the
young officer on his final journey. Wreaths were laid on the body on
behalf of the President of India, by senior Army officers, the
Governor and the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. Former Chief
Minister Shanta Kumar, Minister Ravinder Thakur, MLAs Dulo Ram, Vipin
Parmar, B.B.L. Butail and Pradesh Congress Committee chief Sat Mahajan
also placed wreaths.

Heart-rending scenes were witnessed as the last rites of the officer
were performed. A sense of national pride prevailed as people raised
slogans like ? "Saurabh Kalia amar rahe" and also anti-Pakistan
slogans. Kalia was given a state funeral with full military honours.
The jawans saluted the martyr and sounded the last post as Vaibhav
Kalia lit the pyre among the chanting of mantras.

The government decided to name the locality where the house of Lt
Kalia is located as Saurabhnagar. The former Chief Minister of
Himachal Pradesh, Mr Shanta Kumar, informed that after consultations
with the Chief Minister, it had been decided to erect a memorial to Lt
Kalia. The land adjoining Neugal Cafe would be used for making this.
The road next to the house of Lt Kalia would also be named after him.

In April 2001, the State Government installed a statue of Capt. Kalia
at a 12-hectre sprawling environmental theme park called Lt Saurabh
Van Vihar in Palampur. Capt. Kalia was a keen environmentalist and
birdwatcher.

Today, tourist guide's will probably be rewritten to mention the brave
hero of Palampur and Kargil Martyr Captain Saurabh Kalia, whose fate
was similar to "Abhimaanyu" of Mahabharata.
