Is it possible to create a link to a note on your desktop? What about to a file in a note? I have an excel file I access regularly and right now I open Evernote, navigate to the note from my Evernote shortcuts and open the file in Excel by clicking on the file in my Evernote note.

I'm wondering if there's a way to create a desktop shortcut that will directly open the note (from which I can open the excel file) or even better, if I can create a desktop shortcut that will open the excel file from Evernote directly in Excel?

Oops! missed that bit. ...Although if quick/ frequent access to that file is important you could consider saving it to a cloud server (Google Docs, et al) and adding a link to that file to your desktop. It'll open up immediately.

You can still have a link in your notes too, which will work from other locations; but the desktop link will be quick and easy from that device. (Evernote isn't always the best home for your files...)

I use @gazumped's desktop link for one very often used spreadsheet. The rest I access via the notes. Not that much trouble as I always have EN open on the right monitor of a two monitor set up so they are all a shortcut click away. FWIW.

Thanks for all of the tips. I explored the Google drive option, but found it isn't trivial to create a desktop shortcut that will open an excel file in Excel from Google drive without installing their backup and sync software that is a heavier solution that what I'm looking for. (or using the web-based Google sheets). I like how Evernote seamlessly lets you open an Excel file and save changes to it directly to the note. I haven't come across any issues with file corruption yet.

I opted to create Classic Note Links (right-click note to get menu & hold option for classic link to open the note in the application rather than the web client) and created an automator script to run a /bin/bash script like so: 'open evernote:///view/1234...' (replacing 1234 with the classic note link). I tried to take it a step further and write a script that would open the excel file, but had no luck, but this works for now.

I used Evernote primarily before the big update that made everything look more like a mobile app, and still haven't really gotten used to it. So I was just kinda trying to figure out if I'm missing something that could make using the 'new' evernote easier. I was kinda hoping if people talked about whatever version they liked it'd make more sense to me.

I use and love the desktop client (used on both my PC and my MacBook). I rarely use the web version. I appreciate having access to the full suite of features that the desktop app provides. If you do bulk actions (move, merge, etc) these are much easier on the desktop app. Agree with @gazumped that how you use Evernote will depend in part on which device/app you are using.

I kept the old version of the Windows program for a long time, but gradually began using the Web version for some of the formatting things it could do that v. 6 could not. I began to get used to it and to trust it, and as features were added back and added in, I came to like it and actually find it more usable than the old version. It's all about what one gets used to, I guess. At any rate, I found using the Web version a good transition to finally installing the new Windows desktop program. Among other things, it has a lot of keyboard shortcuts that are not available in the Web version (because browsers snag those for themselves). It also allows you to establish import folders, where you can just deposit files and have them automatically imported into new Evernote notes.

Is there anywhere you can see a side by side function comparison or the web version vs the desktop client? It seems to me some function shave disappeared from the free web version (e.g. move a note to a different notebook). I really only use Evernote for recipes because of the clipping function. At this point I am leaning to move all of them to OneNote.

The primary problem is that when I click on a notebook, including All Notes, in my Windows 10 Desktop app, the notes don't display and I can't view or edit them. I can see all the notebooks, but not the notes within them. The notes sync, and I am able to use the web and android apps but not the desktop app. I have tried:

I only just saw your response, @RavBoy and F11 worked! Thanks so much. And I've resized my left panel which I didn't know how to do. And thanks for the F10 to get rid of the Left Panel. . I've got my desktop app back. Very grateful. Is there somewhere I should look for these types of tips?

I'm having this exact same problem. I even uninstalled and re-installed the desktop app. It briefly worked again but the problem has returned. I also regularly get a pop-up window that is blank. Extremely frustrating.

F11 did not help for me, however logging out of Evernote's desktop app (did not delete local files) and logging back in fixed it. The problem started happening to me all of a sudden 2-3 days ago and I had to use the web interface as a workaround.

I have Evernote on a laptop, desktop, and Android phone. The desktop and Android are fine, but the laptop has started displaying a version of this symptom of blank notes, not blank on other devices or in preview. One of the suggestions I saw elsewhere on the forum was to do a sync, but if you see the images below, there is no sync button on the laptop. I have also noticed that the About, Check for Update, and Release Notes windows are also blank on the laptop. I think everything was normal Friday night, but then like this Saturday morning. The difference in screen layout is puzzling.

F11 DOES NOT WORK to FIX THIS F'NG Problem. So frustrating. I'm telling everyone not to use this app. It only works on your phone. It constantly crashes on the desktop. It will NOT show your notes and this is NOT a new problem.

Still, having a go based on your information: When you say the sidebar is grayed out, you mean that none of the items there is functioning (Notes, Shortcuts, Notebooks, etc.)? What view are you in when double-clicking a note pops it up blank---all notes, a search result, a particular notebook or tag...? When you say the app hasn't updated all notes, that means that there are updates made to notes in the Web client that don't appear in the desktop app?

The responses to Merry are the rudest tech support responses I have ever read. I have the same desire Merry did to have an app lock for my Windows 7 PC desktop THE SAME WAY I DO ON MY IPAD. Why can't you folks just admit up front that Evernote does not provide such an app lock for the desktop. THEN you can make your useless suggestions. As soon as my Evernote subscription runs out, you can bet I will cancel the automatic re-up.

I've not taken the time to read through every comment as it's kind of hard to get through a lot of it. I would like to request the option to password protect at the very lease individual notebooks. I'm one that uses Evernote for both personal and work use. Since my IT dept has access to log on to my computer at any time, It would be a great feature to be able to password protect the desktop app notebooks from prying eyes. I don't want to lock the entire desktop program because I use one folder where I scan my expense receipts in using scannable and that is how I do my expenses. I share the notebook with our CFO. If the App had to be locked, he would have to have access to the password. I've come to learn that as a whole if Evernote is used for personal only, or on iOS only, it's great but if you use it in a company setting, and the company allows you to use it, it is quite unsafe from others gaining access.

Not sure if others will find this helpful, but I have Evernote (desktop version) on my Mac and I can log in and out of it each time I use it. In the top menu, I click "Evernote" and then "Sign Out." Voila. Now no one can see any of my notebooks on my desktop. (I think this is what DTLow was referring to in this thread.)

I came here looking for the same answer as the OP. So to summarize the actual answer to the question asked, instead of the various workarounds being preached in this thread: there is no native PIN or password lock for the EN desktop app on Windows, other than simply signing out of the app. There may be third party apps that do this, such as Gameprotector. Still, others may still be able to see your content if they know how to navigate to the EN database, which is not encrypted.

if just logging out of windows to protect evernote security is the only solution; then why introduce passcode for mobile app? why not just lock the phone when you stop using your phone, and set it to ask for pin/fingerprint when phone needs to be used?

Why don't they then argue the same with mobiles? what was the purpose of the evernote team to waste valuable resources to make an in-app passlock protection, when mobile devices themselves have their own security. And since when are personal mobile phones shared between users? --> same argument can be used that PC's are shared between multiple users (on the same profile) especially at home environments.

It sounded like the original poster was using a 3rd party app to lock Evernote, above and beyond just locking the phone, and was looking for something similar on the PC, hence the discussion. Beyond locking the PC, or localing encrypted storage, I haven't looked for any (but I might, more for a program to keep from procrastinating playing games ? ) [Is there a lock on the Evernote App? I use the desktop version]
