In 2019, transport was either the first or second highest CO2 emitting sector in over 75% of countries. Transport is responsible for almost one-quarter of global emissions. In the UK this is veering towards one-third, with road transport accounting for almost three quarters of these emissions. There is no denying that this is a sector primed for climate action and carbon reduction.
As one of the top polluters, the automotive industry is in a unique position to make an immense impact on global emissions, helping to bring us in line with the zero-carbon targets the science demands of us. This can pave the way for a better and more secure future for our Earth.

"We all have a part to play, and small individual actions are powerful when rolled up as a collective. It was engaging and thought-provoking, it also gave me some practical tools to help me with reducing my carbon footprint."
"For me today was a hugely beneficial eye-opener on how much impact I as an individual can have and how I can also impact a large number of people with the role I have. I found the well-thought-through statistics and graphics that grabbed my attention were what had the most impact for me and the Carbon Map will be something I will continue to use. I also really enjoyed looking at my own carbon footprint. Impactful, eye-opening way to understand what Carbon means to you and the world!"

Following Kipchoge's performance, speculation about the shoes he wore circulated in running communities. Based on Nike patents, it was predicted he wore prototype trainers that included three carbon-fibre plates (this ultimately wasn't true) and a high sole height. Pictures from the event showed his prototype shoes also included two airbags under the forefoot.
Last week, World Athletics, the international organisation responsible for running, said it believed shoe technology could be damaging the integrity of running and introduced rules laying out what shoes can be worn by elite athletes in competitions. It added a 40mm limit for sole height for road shoes, said prototypes couldn't be used in officially sanctioned races and decided a shoe can only have one carbon-fibre (or similar) plate inside.
The Alphafly are distinctive. They still include a single carbon fibre plate and Nike's soft, yet springy ZoomX foam, that encourages athletes to run on their toes. The trainer's upper is made of a new version of the company's Flyknit material, called Atomknit. It's a thinner and stronger version of the knitting technology.
So far, the company hasn't put an efficiency percentage gain on the Alphafly. However, Wouter Hoogkamer, an academic at the University of Massachusetts, who has studied both previous versions of the shoe believes it is likely to be higher. "I can only assume that the metabolic savings in the Alphafly are beyond those in the Next% and 4%," Hoogkamer said in an email before the shoe was officially launched, adding he has no data to prove this yet. It's believed the combination of the ZoomX foam and carbon-fibre plate reduce the amount of effort that's put on the calf muscles while running, meaning athletes are able to be more efficient and not tire as quickly.
The company is so confident in the Air Pods ability to save energy that it is releasing them on a number of shoes. Including those that break the new World Athletics rules. A Tempo NEXT% version of the trainer ditches a full length carbon-fibre plate in favour of a mid-length plate that's located near the front of the foot. But its sole height is above the rules. Nike says the shoe is designed for training, rather than racing, and therefore it's unlikely that elite athletes, who the new rules apply to, will use it in any competitions. It's still going to sell the shoes.
"If you had a block of foam you can just make it thinner or fatter. Whereas this one you can tune the air pressure and the size of it," Bignell says. Different sizes of trainers have different Air Pod pressures and heights. It's the reason why Kipchoge's shoes have a higher overall sole height than other versions.
The Air Pods are also being included in shoes for other sports. Nike says it has created a version of its Mercurial football boot that has a sack of air running along the bottom of the boot that's been added to help stop players losing energy towards the end matches. There are also basketball trainers that include the pods. Bignell says that as the shoes are proven to work, the company expects to introduce more Air Pods across other sports.
