Hello All:
As spring is here in NY, my eyes search the skies for glimpses of migration.
I am used to seeing soaring Red-tailed hawks here at Forest Park, Queens New York.  I have been following migration reports from upstate NY with interest on HAWKCOUNT...... Turkey Vulture, Red-tailed hawk, Red-shouldered hawk, Bald eagle, Cooper's Hawk, Sharp-shinned hawk........... Yesterday I got some interesting views of a migrating Cooper's Hawk - Accipter cooperii - Gavilán de Cooper (Sp)  I was able to get about 20 shots of the same Cooper's Hawk as it circled, caught some rise on a slight thermal, then proceeded northward.
Canon EOS 40 D with 400mm 5.6
It is impossible show in a single shot, a defining flight posture. Flight is dynamic and variable with raptors adjusting flight to meet the conditions.
I own a tattered copy of Jerry Liguori's HAWKS FROM EVERY ANGLE - How to identify raptors in flight.
Princeton University Press. This is one of the best books out there on  ID ing raptors in flight.

Good birding.
