April 18, 2008, Waco Wetlands, 55F-61F, 8 AM-11 AM, Sunny, Clear
Skies, Windy.
Nine White-faced Ibis and a Chipping Sparrow were the best birds of
the day followed by some Little Blue Herons, a Blue Gray Gnatcatcher,
and an Eastern Kingbird. The White-faced Ibis were on Pond 1 on the
river side. These fairly big birds had brown bodies and iridescent
green wings, a dark face on which no white was visible. Their bills
were dark gray to black and decurved. Legs are pinkish to reddish.
The birds were in constant ambulation with heads bobbing in shallows.
The Chipping Sparrow flew into a puddle on the road near the entrance.
Red ocre cap and white then dark stripe through the eye were visible.
When it flew it went to the oak near the entrance. The Blue Gray
Gnatcatcher’s forehead was quite black, but it displayed its tail
flipped up in characteristic fashion, white eye ring noticeable. 27
species total.
