Fri 1 Jan Eastern Yellow Wagtail Lake Mitchell (Quaids Dam)
non breeding adult. 3 observers had good views of bird perched ontop of
low tree before it flew onto the ground. Distinct outer white tail
feathers in flight. Lack of dark streaking on the under and upper parts
ruled out Australasian Pipit which also has white outer tail feathers.

1 adult. uncommon at this site.

Wed 30 Dec Zebra Finch The Orient, Ingham
Three birds sighted. Unusual to see this species in such lush grassy
surroundings outside the dry season months. Sighted with numerous
Chestnut-breatsed mannikin and 6 Crimson Finches. One Common Myna also
sighted here.

Some unusual sightings in Yungaburra: Double-barred finch (Petersen
Creek), Banded Honeyeater, Yellow Honeyeater (in town), Yellow-faced
Honeyeater, Cotton Pygmy Goose.

Sat 26 Dec Little Button-quail Paluma Region (Private Property)
One Little Button-quail on vehicle track at 19°04'42"S; 146°09'46"E
(GDA) elevation about 650m ASL (9km SSW of town of Paluma). We watched
this bird for about 15minutes, initially from a flush, it landed about
30m down the track, sat still, then started rocking back and forward,
and then proceded to feed. This sighting is about 50km NE of accepted
range.

Thu 24 Dec Large-tailed Nightjar Paluma Region (Private Property)
At least two Large-tailed Nightjars heard calling nightly from
24/12/2009 to 27/12/2009 at 19°01'05"S; 146°06'32"E (GDA) (10.5km west
of town of Paluma). Spotlighting on the nights of 25&26/12/2009 returned
good views perched and in flight. Considered common on the coastal
lowlands; uncommon at this elevation of about 900m ASL. First time we
have recorded this species here.

Peregrine Falcon Paluma Region (Private Property)
One Peregrine Falcon Juvenile first observed (extended views) 24/12/2009
at 19°01'05"S; 146°06'32"E (GDA) elevation about 860m ASL (10.5km west
of town of Paluma). This juvenile bird was then seen accompanying an
adult Peregrine on 25/12/2009 at the same location. The Juvenile was
seen again on 27&28/12/2009. "This species has been rarely recorded in
the Paluma region." (A.C.M. Griffin)

Published sightings for the week ending 10 Jan 2010.
Thu 7 Jan Buff-banded Rail Racecourse Road, Cluden, Townsville
Standing water on left of bitumen road about 200 metres before the
mangrove creek bridge, just before entering the sewerage treatment works
(restricted area sign). Two birds being bullied by a Masked Lapwing.
Access to this area remains available between 6.00 am and 6.00 pm
despite road building activities. The usual array of wetland species
present also including Wandering and Plumed Whistling Duck,
Black-fronted Dotterel, Black-winged Stilt, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper and
Royal Spoonbill plus Egrets.
