Even our Danish Prime Minister is on the Facebook ... !
I will at once call him and warn him about the Facebook.

But anyway, my RFI is just to learn if there is a similar
Facebook group for Birding-Aus.

I find this Facebook NEOORN group is a nice supplement
for the NEOORN birding list. Among other to see pictures
of the members of NEOORN.

I think the danger in Facebook is the amount of information that people
reveal about themselves and now I gather there are 3rd party applications
which gather even more information. Of course, all BirdingAus material is
already available online so any information you post to BA is already
available to anyone.
Anyway - Danish birders are probably better looking than the Aussie ones!

Just avoid the silly applications.

I'd join a Birding Aus Facebook group if there was one.

A recent article on fraud on Facebook - of course it is not Facebook to
blame, more stupid users (

And they don't need Facebook - recent survey showed that Nigerian email
scams were netting at least $36m a year in Aus (and another survey showed
Victorians were losing $250m a year to online fraud).

Just think the recent scam with olympics tickets. I'm a pretty savvy
internet user but that one was particularly slick and I can imaging being
caught out by it. One thing to remember about any website like facebook is
there is no legal requirement for you to give them personal details. That
is true for you (to protect yourself) but is also true for other users who
may be out to scam you. A little caution goes a long way.

Peter, can you please tell me what NEOORN use this group for?

And is it of any use to people who aren't Facebook members themselves?
I had a look at it, and couldn't see much there, perhaps because I
hadn't logged in, or because I'm not a member of the group.

even english is not my motherlanguage, I hope you will understand
my danish/english.

Internet data files around the world faster than ever. The Internet
seems to be neither here nor there. The world is one big wire, and
distance is dead.

Before the World Wide Web, the bird watchers were a bunch of
independent agents. After, the emergent behavior is in the increase
in the connectivity between them, as in a neural net. And Facebook
is one of many options.

I am not a Facebook specialist, but I am allways curious to learn
about new cyberspace possibilties related to my interest for birds.

And in cyberspace I allways only tell, write etc. about matters, which
I am not 'affraid' to hear, read etc. again.

I am not affraid for cyberspace, but on the other hand I am not naive.
For me cyberspace is a 'partner', not an 'enemy'.

The Facebook home of NEOORN is group devoted to networking
among those working on the biology of Neotropical birds - South
and Central America - and which I can understand is a convenient
place to post photos, videos, and to network.

I find this Facebook group is a nice supplement for the NEOORN
birding list, and for me especially interesting because it is possible
to see pictures of some of the NEOORN members, and by this way
these persons become 'real' persons, and not just a 'cyberspace'
persons.

And remember nobody will force any to join the Facebook; it is
just an option.

I am certainly not interested to start a Facebook debate, and I
