The following is a digest of Sightings Reported on Birdpedia for the period Monday, March 19, 2012 to Sunday, March 25, 2012:

Area: SA

Date: Monday, March 19, 2012

Location: Thompson Beach

Eastern Curlew (Numenius madagascariensis) (1) One seen at 1800hrs, feeding in shallow water, 600m South of southern carpark.

Fairy Tern (Sterna nereis) (1) 82 counted in group + approximately 20 scattered nearby. They were resting near the tidal margin at 1400hrs, directly in front of the central carpark.

The day was very warm with gusting Northerly winds. The banded stilt hordes did not start arriving (from the North) at the sandflats to the South of the central carpark until after 1430hrs, leaving the best feeding areas to numerous red knots and approximately 150 great knots. The other usual migratory wader species (Bar-tailed godwit, common greenshank, red-necked stint, etc.) were present in smaller numbers. We counted 12 grey plovers.

High tide at 1600hrs was only 1.7m, enabling the waders to continue feeding until dusk on an outgoing tide.

Date: Tuesday, March 20, 2012

Location: On our property at Rockleigh

White-browed Woodswallow (Artamus superciliosus) (1) We knew the woodswallows were nearby, as they were seen a couple of kilometres down the road. Today one bird was heard calling overhead, then was spotted. This is species 60 recorded for our land (although the general number of species seen in any weekend is 12-18).

After a couple of months with NO welcome swallows roosting under our veranda (or indeed seen in the creek bed), after there having been up to 150 in the three preceding years, about 10 took shelter from torrential rain last Wednesday. Last night 2 roosted under tthe veranda. Where have they gone ?

Reported by: Barbara and Peter Bansemer on Wednesday, March 21, 2012

---------------------------------------------

Date: Sunday, March 25, 2012

Location: Jones Road, Hahndorf.

Musk Duck (Biziura lobata) (2) Two. One at either side of dam, close to shoreline closest to road.

Blue-billed Duck (Oxyura australis) (12) A compact group, well out from road, close to far wall of dam.

These observations refer to the larger dam, closest to Hahndorf. Water levels both on this dam and on Hanna Lake were low, exposing broad, muddy, shorelines.
