During an April study tour to Israel we made a visit to Nebi Daniel which was a vineyard, fresh and green from the latter rains of spring. Here we examined John 15 and Isaiah 5 together. It was the first time for me to see illustrated what you may have heard me teach at the Abiding Life for Difficult Times Advance. In one portion of the vineyard, the vines were not on trellises but rather lifted up as they would have been during the days of Jesus.

Thanks Ron. I am, by default, reluctant to challenge the translation of scripture, so I have been encouraged by comments on this thread showing that some translations, such as the Passion, do, in fact, have lifted up.

But, just as Jesus, by his embrace of horrendous violence, revealed the redemptive grace of God and made it available to all humanity, so Mamie Till Bradley revealed that grace by lifting up her broken child from the earth in faith and giving meaning to the suffering of her 14-year-old son. And Jesus continues to be lifted up before us on the Cross, the image becoming ever clearer as we approach Holy Week.

Out of many people in the Bible who enjoyed lifted-up life, the case of Jesus Christ is most remarkable and serves a reference point to for the believer to learn some lessons. Not only was Jesus Christ lifted up, He also lifted up many lives out of sins, sickness, prison, poverty, failure, barrenness, lameness, etc. A careful review of the life of Jesus Christ, points to three major discernible epochs that exemplified the lifted-up life phenomena. These are (1) Before He was born, (2) When He died on the Cross of calvary and (3) when He resurrected and ascended to heaven. Each of these epochs is undergirded by important lessons worthy of digging into:

The second epoch of the lifted-up life of Jesus Christ happened at the end of His earthly ministry when He was arrested and sentenced to death by crucifixion. Although many people including the Pharisees and the scribes, did not believe Him, Jesus Christ predicted his crucifixion and resurrection several times in the Gospels as indicated in the following sampled scriptures:

This ministration reviews the Lifted-Up Life of Jesus Christ and provides recommendations that every believer must follow to also live a lifted-up life that will end up in heaven with Jesus Christ after the rapture

Jesus makes a play on words with "lifted up" and "exalted." The snake in the desert was lifted up on a pole, and Jesus would be lifted up on a pole as well. The word translated as "cross" really means "post" or "stake." Nicodemus would not have heard this meaning because Jesus's lifting up on the post was in the future. He would have heard Jesus saying that he must be exalted. Nicodemus learned what this meant later in the Gospels when he helps with Jesus's funeral.

lifted -- The word translated as "lifted up" is from a verb that means "to lift high," "to raise up." It is a metaphor for "to elevate" and "to exalt." Jesus uses several words to mean "lift" or "raise" up but he uses this one primarily when making a play on words.

must -- (CW) The Greek verb translated as "must" is a special verb that means "it is needed," and "there is a need." It is always singular, 3rd person. The subject here is the infinitive of the verb below, "to be lifted up is needed" or more properly in English, "lifting up is needed.

lifted -- (WF) The word translated as "lifted up" is from a verb that means "to lift high," "to raise up." It is a metaphor for "to elevate" and "to exalt." Jesus uses several words to mean "lift" or "raise" up but he uses this one primarily when making a play on words. In Greek, this is an infinite, which acts as a noun describing the action, "to lift up." It is the subject of "is needed." However, in English, we use the gerund as the subject form of a verb so "lifting up is needed - ."
