I have a .mp4 movie (it's an .mp4 file, and the "video codec" is Xvid, and the "audio codec" is mp3) that I want to play, but when I try to open it in MPlayer, it says "The steam is encrypted and decryption is not supported." I tried to apply the answer from this question and this wiki page, but neither worked.
VLC Player will play just about anything. If your MP3/MP4 files still do not work, you will need to download the restricted codecs pack. Search for these in Google and use the above command to install them once you find out what the file-name is. I.e., type in sudo apt-get install [filename].
Try xine or VNC media players, My personal choice is xine because it uses very little resources. Both are in the repository. Edit, sorry, did not see comment above. Where did the file come from? Can you post a link to it? Is it a pay to view movie?

I don't see YouTube mentioned too much in the various threads about Google Play giftcard credit, so I thought I'd make it visible. FYI this method of purchasing shows and movies is the exact same library as Google TV (formerly Google Play Movies and TV) so a purchase on either website/app will be playable on both websites and apps.
Well, it worked for a while, but all of a sudden today, all but one of my apple tv's will not play purchased media. Wish this would get fixed. But yes. it seems to have happened when i updated to Catalina. I'm just not sure what to do anymore. Even apple support could not fix this. Who Knows anymore.
Who wants to sit at the computer to watch a playlist full of tv shows or movies though. You have to authorize your mac to get apple tv to home share purchased media. Then you can just sit in the easy chair and click on a home shared computer with a playlist of your tv shows all in a row and relax. I know you can use the apple tv app on the apple tv itself just to stream them, but you should not have to, and the app has no playlist so you have to click on each show separately. Compared to what we've been doing for the last 13 years of having the apple tv home share. I know i complain, but Apple give it to us and it's part of what we pay for, so it should work, right?
It's funny. I've got 1 Apple TV. It is authorized already and plays fine. I de-Authorized it (well the computer actually) , then re-authorized it and it played as before. So It works whenever. But two other apple tvs with the same software and same model just won't authorize. It's like...you can have only 1 Apple TV to play purchases. Weird Huh! And this problem just began again after 2 years of no problems. Somethings going on 'under the hood' somewhere. Who Knows.? I just bought a brand new Apple TV 4k today. So one way or the other, I'm gonna get it to work. When I find out, I'll let you all know here.
I've been on the phone around 2 hours with apple support. I think It's the fact that the Authorization process in broken or down for some reason. Because, I have one Apple TV that works fine. So I de Authorized it and it still played my purchases. So I'm thinking that there is a communication problem with authorization this week. I have 5 apple tv 4ks and all have different OS Versions on them. Back to 14.2 and none work. but the one that was already authorized is still working and i can't make it stop working...so maybe they'll get it fixed pretty fast.
I'm having the same issue. I have 6 Apple TVs that I and my family have around the house (inherited a couple from family who were tired of Apple). All was fine until about 1 week ago and it spread to all the Apple TVs. Can stream but cannot play from any Library (even started a new library from a different PC). Seems to be stemming from my Apple account, nothing local.
Apple TV 4 will not play purchased movies in my App TV / iTunes library. After all manner of reinstalls and reboots and reauthorizations I finally reset the Apple TV to factory settings and VIOLA!!!! I went through the Apple TV settings and picked one home screen for all devices and it reestablished all of the apps in the previous group folders. The only thing that did not restore was the Movie/tv show playlists. No big deal. At least I now have my Apple TV back and it will play all of my movies and tv shows.
mollisue, The majority of the foreign movies are played in their original languages but subtitled in Turkish. I have watched Star Wars in English two weeks ago with Turkish subtitles. Here if the movie is not originally a Turkish movie, it will have subtitles: " -cinemaximum-budak".
When I watch Hallmark live, it does work, but as soon as I try to watch a movie from Hallmark Movies Now, they just return to the play options when I press play. It worked fine before yesterday, my subscribtion is fine, I logged in and out, I cleared my browser settings (history, cookies and so on) and within the app I have the same problem. It is only with Hallmark Movies Now. The rest that I have on the Roku Channel I can watch just fine.

I am having the same issue. When I try to play any movie in the Hallmark Movies Now App on Roku and press play it does not play and just reloads the same screen. I am subscribed and there is no way to remove the channel, though I did unsubscribe. I also tried a System Restart and it did not help the problem. Note this only occurs on Hallmark Movies Now and Faith and Family channels in the Roku app, all of my other streaming services are working fine. I called Hallmark channel and they were helpful but said it was an issue with Roku channel and not them. Any chance I can get help fixing this? Sad to see such terrible customer service here.

Even more confusing is the fact that movies you buy/rent in Google Play store are meant to be played with the Google Play movie app (4th app) but can, like Paul has done, be played via the Youtube app.
It is a completely confusing mess.
That said in July Google said it is combining Google Play Music, Youtube Red and Youtube music in the near future. The teams are now combined and hopefully is result in one app that does it all or at least fewer with a more clear understanding of what does what.
However it could result in this option Paul uses being removed?
Of course NONE of this should be confused with Youtube TV which is yet another service. Not sure if it has any overlap but I bet it does.
Hi everyone. I downloaded a movie to my PC, where I started to play it in order to check that it was ok, which it was.
I then copied it from PC to 32 GB USB flash drive/ memory stick. Again,It worked when I started to play it on the PC. I then plugged the flash drive into the USB port on my Sony Bravia KDL32EX503 TV.
A message appeared on the screen to say that the flash drive had been inserted, but nothing happened after that.
What am I doing wrong?

I have strange case.. All these days, my Sony Bravia was playing all movies from external hard disk and pen drives. But, from last two days it stopped recognizing the movie files. I am not sure what has happened to my TV. Can some one help me in solving this?
Is there anyway I can play movies I have on an external hard drive to Sky Glass? Used to have Plex and that's why I have them on a hard drive. Just wondering if it is possible? If not, it's no problem as I can still play on my laptop.
No, there's no media player software on Glass.
The way I watch video files stored on a hard drive on my OLED TV is by connecting the drive to my 4K BluRay player via USB. This is then connected to my TV via HDMI. Works well.
@SlenderRobert thanks , i can play them in my bedroom as we have an LG TV and it can get them easily when connected at the back of the tv using usb port. Was hoping to use the Sky Glass but as I said, no problem, was just wondering. Thanks again..
