Here is a link that shows the efficacy of TMS as well as it's approval
by the FDA http://www.biospace.com/news_story.aspx?NewsEntityId=112245

A bit from the article....

FDA Clears Neuronetics, Inc.'s NeuroStar(R) TMS Therapy for the
Treatment of Depression
10/8/2008

MALVERN, Pa., Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Neuronetics, Inc., a privately-
held medical device company and a leader in the field of
neuromodulation, announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) has cleared its NeuroStar TMS (Transcranial
Magnetic Stimulation) Therapy system for the treatment of depression.
NeuroStar TMS Therapy® is specifically indicated for the treatment of
Major Depressive Disorder in adult patients who have failed to achieve
satisfactory improvement from one prior antidepressant medication at
or above the minimal effective dose and duration in the current
episode. In clinical trials with NeuroStar TMS Therapy, these patients
had been treated with a median of 4 medication treatment attempts, one
of which achieved criteria for adequate dose and duration.

"Clinical neuroscience advances have greatly improved the diagnosis
and treatment of depression, but much more is needed. These disorders
lead the world in producing disability, and more than half of the
millions being treated for clinical depression currently fail to
achieve wellness," said John Greden, MD, Professor of Psychiatry &
Clinical Neurosciences and Executive Director of the University of
Michigan Comprehensive Depression Center. "Before now, few options
have been available for them other than complex and often unproven
combinations of medications. Now, with the FDA clearance of NeuroStar
TMS Therapy, there is new hope."

The NeuroStar TMS Therapy system is the first and only TMS Therapy®
device cleared by the FDA for the treatment of depression. TMS Therapy
is a non-systemic (does not circulate in the bloodstream throughout
the body) and non-invasive (does not involve surgery) form of
neuromodulation which stimulates nerve cells in an area of the brain
that is linked to depression, by delivering highly focused MRI-
strength magnetic pulses. Patients being treated by NeuroStar TMS
Therapy do not require anesthesia or sedation and remain awake and
alert. It is a 40-minute outpatient procedure that is prescribed by a
psychiatrist and performed in a psychiatrist's office. The treatment
is typically administered daily for 4-6 weeks.

Larry, I strongly recommend that you give this procedure a serious
shot. No Spoof! Here is a link that shows the locations where they
can magnetize your beanie <laffin> www.NeuroStarTMS.com Telephone #
Neuronetics Customer Service Center at (877) 600-7555.

You know, Since I used to be a wizkid, I am seriously considering
putting a plan together to start one of these TMS Centers. No kidding.
I already know the equipment requirements from my visit to AU, The
Alfred, in 2003. I'll keep you posted.

Has this been tested specifically for those with bipolar disorder?
Some medication (I know this is not medication) used to treat
depression makes bipolar symptoms worse. What stats are available for
those suffering from bipolar?

Well Sparrow, you could take my word for it. As I mentioned earlier in
another post, I participated in one of the original double blind
controlled studies at the Monash Psychiatric Institute; part of The
Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, AU. Or, you could user google or any
other search engine that you please and enter the words transcranial

I haven't yet had time to look at all -- though most are for unipolar,
but this one which is cited
a number of times, does not show promise for bipolar:

1: Bipolar Disord. 2003 Feb;5(1):40-7.Click here to read Links
Left prefrontal transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatment
of depression in bipolar affective disorder: a pilot study of acute
safety and efficacy.
Nahas Z, Kozel FA, Li X, Anderson B, George MS.

Brain Stimulation Laboratory, Department of Psychiatry, Medical
University of South Carolina, Charleston 29425, USA.

OBJECTIVES: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS)
has been shown to improve depressive symptoms. We designed and carried
out the following left prefrontal rTMS study to determine the safety,
feasibility, and potential efficacy of using TMS to treat the
depressive symptoms of bipolar affective disorder (BPAD). METHODS: We
recruited and enrolled 23 depressed BPAD patients (12 BPI depressed
state, nine BPII depressed state, two BPI mixed state). Patients were
randomly assigned to receive either daily left prefrontal rTMS (5 Hz,
110% motor threshold, 8 sec on, 22 sec off, over 20 min) or placebo
each weekday morning for 2 weeks. Motor threshold and subjective
rating scales were obtained daily, and blinded Hamilton Rating Scale
for Depression (HRSD) and Young Mania Rating Scales (YMRS) were
obtained weekly. RESULTS: Stimulation was well tolerated with no
significant adverse events and with no induction of mania. We failed
to find a statistically significant difference between the two groups
in the number of antidepressant responders (>50% decline in HRSD or
HRSD <10 - 4 active and 4 sham) or the mean HRSD change from baseline
over the 2 weeks (t = -0.22, p = 0.83). Active rTMS, compared with
sham rTMS, produced a trend but not statistically significant greater
improvement in daily subjective mood ratings post-treatment (t = 1.58,
p = 0.13). The motor threshold did not significantly change after 2
weeks of active treatment (t = 1.11, p = 0.28). CONCLUSIONS: Daily
left prefrontal rTMS appears safe in depressed BPAD subjects, and the
risk of inducing mania in BPAD subjects on medications is small. We
failed to find statistically significant TMS clinical antidepressant
effects greater than sham. Further studies are needed to fully
investigate the potential role, if any, of TMS in BPAD depression.

I have read the articles from the link. What really made an impact on
me was reading in one of the articles that for one of the research
subjects not only did it work for him it was an alternative to the
medication he was on that caused him such adverse side effects, such
as weight gain. Boho gal, obviously lithium is working out for you
but when I was on it it shut my thyroid down and I gained ALOT of
weight. Also it failed to stabilise my mood effectively. And from
reading those articles I am starting to see where Darkman's passion
for this therapy comes from. I am lucky the current meds I am on
haven't given me big knarly side effects but it sounds like so many of
you peepers do including Darkman. This therapy could be freedom from
that.

Also another interesting thing I saw in an article was a research
subject using the term "remission" for his depression, as in "I'm in
remission". Hmmmmm, I just hadn't come across that line of thinking
about depression before. But then again, I'm no doctor.

Keep up the fabulously yummy links Darkman!

Rubbish~ Show me a link?

Yep weight gain is a bitch. I gained 30 # on a new steroid to combat
inflamation. Sucked. The weigh is off but unfortunately the steroid
didn't do it's job. Really not the steroid's fault. It was given
tooooooo late to do me any good.

Yep could happen but I wonder did you have a base run of your thyroid
and did you have your liver enzymes checked once per month?

In my opinion, Li. Sux But that is only because I was not depressed
and had 3 wankers as PDocs. ramped me up to 2000 mgs in 7 weeks. After
I quit drooling and could figure out how to drive again...sidebar...I
am a licenced SCCA A car pilot....thank god I didn't try to fly..I

Huh? I had no side effects from TMS at all. The marching orders were
to keep taking whatever cocktail you were on and then to walk into the
Alfred and GO FOR IT

> I am lucky the current meds I am on

What would give you any idea that you have a clue as to what side
effect I have Carolyn? I cannot remember discussing that with you at
all????

> This therapy could be freedom from that."

Again what make you think that TMS frees you from drug side effects
Caro? The fact of the matter is that TMS will (well it did for me
until I came back to America) free you from depression! Period, et
all. If you drop a hit of acid you get off. If you take Li and don't
need it you get side effects. The list goes on... You really surprised
me with this both sides of your mouth rubbish Caro.....

Do educate me as to the link that I provided that gave you the clue
that one of the practitioners was a plant. If we are talking about the

The Australian Broad Company. Not to be confused with the BPBC BiPolar
Broadcasting Corporation which I own.....

I love research....wish everyone read the articles all the way through

the same articles. Relationships be damned, facts are facts. Show me

As I must have written before sparrow, bad information is much worse
than no information. If a person walks through the door looking to
have a question answered but sees what she or he thinks is a possible
one answer they may walk out with a faulty or even dangerous
information....and think how lucky they were, they didn't even have to
risk showing themselves by actually asking a question.

In regard to Carolyn, I personally like her very much. however, in
this particular case she made a poor choice by offering faulty
information with no verification and contradicted herself twice. She
knows better. The corrections were not cruel, they were just
corrections.

As to my lemOnade, it comes in many flavors depending on what I might
have dined on the night before.
