I've been using TeX for about 20 years, and I'm now trying to learn LaTeX. Fonts have always been the trickiest part of TeX/LaTeX for me, and I'm completely lost. I tried to follow this guide -archive/info/tex-font-errors-cheatsheet/tex-font-cheatsheet.pdf which looks pretty awesome, but while it might help me figure out what I'm doing wrong, it doesn't help me figure out how to do it right instead.
Let's go back to the .fls file. Just after the line that shows the .tfm file has been read in, we find that also pbklc7t.vf is loaded. Yes, pbklc7t is a virtual font, built from two copies of pbkl8r.tfm (it's a fake small caps font, where lower case letters are scaled uppercase ones).
This means that cmdh is available only at fixed sizes, in medium weight and normal shape. Asking for the font at 28pt will result in the one for 29.86pt substituted. More importantly, there is no small caps shape defined, so when you ask for it, you will get normal shape, which is what the warning

download prepends host resident fonts to files and writes the results on the standard output. If no files are specified, or if - is one of the input files, the standardinput is read. download assumes the input files make up a single PostScript job and that requested fonts can be included at the start of each input file.
The map table consists of fontname-file pairs. The fontname is the full name of the PostScript font, exactly as it would appear in a %%DocumentFonts: comment. The file is the pathname of the host resident font. A file that begins with a / is usedas is. Otherwise the pathname is relative to the host font directory. Comments are introduced by % (as in PostScript) and extend to the end of the line.
The only candidates for downloading are fonts listed in the map table that point download to readable files. A font is downloaded once, at most. Requests for unlisted fonts or inaccessible files are ignored. All requests are ignored if the map table can not be read.

I'm building some functionality into a Rails app that requires ImageMagick. I'm currently using the RMagick gem to overlay custom text atop an image. I'd like to be able to offer the user a selection of fonts to choose from, however I'm finding the stock set of fonts that came with GhostScript (what I have on my system) to be rather limiting.
What I'd like to know is how I can import/load custom fonts (e.g. Lato) for use with ImageMagick in a way that will work locally but also on Heroku. Specifically I'm building an image caption (see code below) and want to be able to specify a font that's not in the list.
When creating a new caption (this probably applies to other types of text as well), you can specify a font as a string (e.g. ArialBold) if it's in your /etc/ImageMagick/type-ghostscript.xml. If it's not listed there though, you can also pass the absolute file path as a string. Make sure to use double quotes. ImageMagick will accept TTF and OTF fonts (possibly others but I haven't tested).

Function: Many fonts contain alternate glyph designs for a purely esthetic effect; these don't always fit into a clear category like swash or historical. As in the case of swash glyphs, there may be more than one alternate form. This feature replaces the default forms with the stylistic alternates. The user applies this feature to Industria to get the alternate form of g.
Options can be supplied in an initialization file, and on the commandline; command-line settings override initialization file settings.See theINITIALIZATION FILEsection below. To process a file whose name begins with a hyphen, hide the hyphenbehind a directory path. For example, on UNIX, the file name-foo.barcould be written as./-foo.bar.A command-line argument consisting of a single hyphen is taken as areference to the standard input file, rather than as an illegaloption. UNIX and MS DOS, at least, lack a way of referring to thestandard I/O units by a file name, so the hyphen convention iscommonly used in UNIX software. A hyphen can be used anywhere a filename can be used, but only the first instance can usefully supply datatolptops.Letter case in option names is ignored, but is significant in optionvalues.Long option names may be abbreviated to the minimum unique prefix.Option descriptions with[=num]following the option name can have an optional integer value. If thevalue is omitted, then the option if set if it was previously unset, and unset if it was previously set. If an integer value is provided, then a zero value unsets the option, and a non-zero value sets it,independent of any prior setting of the option. Instead of an integervalue, you may specify a string value ofyes or trueto set the option, orno or falseto unset it. The string values may be abbreviated, and letter case isnot significant. For options that take a value, that valuemustbe supplied in thesameargument, separated from the option name by a colon or equals sign. The separator character may be preceded and followed by an arbitrarynumber of spaces and tabs, provided suitable shell quoting is suppliedto protect the spaces from being interpreted as argument separators. If the value begins with a non-letter, the separator can be omitted. For example,-p:10bp,-p=10bp,'-p 10bp"'and-p10bpare equivalent.
