Natural forests as climate actors

International climate discourse mentions forests in two contexts: as carbon depositaries and as renewable sources of materials and energy. If implemented in global policies, this narrow view on forests can, contrary to expectations, worsen climate destabilization. Two crucial aspects are undervalued and understudied. First is the major role of forests as regulators of the various aspects of the water cycle, including cloud cover (a major source of climate uncertainties) and ocean-to-land and transcontinental transport of atmospheric moisture. Second is the difference in the environmental functions of primary forests, largely unperturbed by anthropogenic activities, versus exploited tree stands. While the former have evolved to maximize environmental homeostasis, the latter were selected to maximize economic productivity. The two cannot be maximized simultaneously. Successful strategies of climate mitigation should prioritize preservation of still extant self-sustainable natural forests for humanity to continue benefiting from their climate stabilization potential.

Best wishes
Anastassia

Dear colleagues,

Link to my presentation yesterday at IAS-TUM is https://yadi.sk/i/hXpxwSH6DoyI-g
There was an inspiring discussion! It was great to see some of you there and even chat! Thanks Christian for your question!

The presentation was supposed to be recorded and posted online. Unfortunately, it now appears that due to technical glitches it was not.

To record this presentation for the web, I will repeat the presentation via Zoom on Saturday 30 October at 12.00 (midday) Munich time (13.00 Moscow). If some of you have time and interest, please email me and I will send you the Zoom conference details. If we are a few, we will maybe even have a discussion. Forests are growing in importance as you are reading this!

Warm regards
Anastassia

Dear Anastassia,
Unfortunately, I could not listen yesterday, and I cannot follow it on Saturday, but I would like to see it later on. Will it be posted on the web?

Best wishes

Dear colleagues,

our plans are shaping -- after my Zoom presentation we will have a discussion and Dr. Anna Nemchinova will brief us about her very recent research on the White Sea.

The White Sea coast of the Onega Peninsula is a scene of the action of forest biota as a natural climate control machine

We plan to have everything recorded and uploaded to youtube.

Warm regards,

Anastassia

Dear Anastassia and colleagues,

This is from a paper just published in Nature: "The global terrestrial carbon sink is increasing, offsetting roughly a third of anthropogenic CO2 released into the atmosphere each decade, and thus serving to slow the growth of atmospheric CO2". To me, this sounds like biotic regulation.

Best wishes,
Juan

But there are a lot of publications with the opposite statement- that "many forests became net carbon emitters now". And I'm afraid that the next statement will be - to destroy THESE "bad forests"?
It's very hard to understand and believe in the "forest biotic regulation" concept based on the CO concept of climate change. In this concept forests can only absorb-and-store or  emit CO2.

Alexander

There is a huge difference between a real forest ecosystem, developing during a process of secondary growth and species diversity, and a mere plantation of "commercially valuable timber" trees. The first is a net sequesterer, the plantations tend to be emitters of carbon.
