Dear all,

A very informative film about Swedish forest (mis)management was recently distributed by Greenpeace.

Dear colleagues,

you may be interested in this post of mine, where I try to explain the concept of "holobiont." I also mention biotic regulation

Thanks, Mats! In Russia these ideas have been around for quite some time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZ6odC6CLjA
Will something change?
Best wishes

Thanks, Ugo! Very interesting and important points. I am sure Antonio will join you in your appreciation of collaboration over competition. We have discussed this many times.

The biotic regulation, however, emphasizes the balance between the two -- competition among internally cooperating units (e.g. competition among the anthills). This relates to recent Arie's questions. If there is no competition and stabilising selection, the very ability to cooperate will degrade. It does not come as granted (think of cancer).

The main biotic regulation's "trick" is to maintain such an environment where competition favors those who do the right things, including internal collaboration. As a global result, everybody wins. But not any environment is suitable. E.g. if there is a resource abundance, the decay will follow.

I am sorry I have been a bit unresponsive recently, but we are continuing our hurricane studies, for your possible interest https://arxiv.org/abs/2101.06500 (the main message is in the last but one paragraph of Conclusions). I hope to return to more biotic regulation issues soon.

Best wishes
Anastassia

Thanks to you Anastasia. In my talk, I emphasized collaboration but, obviously competition is what sucks entropy out of the system, as you explain in your book.

Working at many things at the same time, we'll stay in contact!

Dear Ugo,

I very much like the way you phrase that "competition is what sucks entropy out of the system."

Best, Arie
