Hi everybody,
First off, a happy new year to you all from the Biobytes group (We know it's late, but hey, only 1/24th of the year's done yet!).
Next, we call you all to the first talk from Biobytes for this year - we take up the crazy technique of CRISPR - the breakthrough of 2015 - this time around.
What's CRISPR, you say? CRISPR, short for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats, is a technique used for genome editing, amongst other applications. It is a method that takes advantage of the bacterial immune system against viruses to create cuts in DNA at specific locations, these locations determined by a user-specified RNA. No longer does one need to call in Zn fingers to cut at any location, or look for Restriction sites in the DNA. And its way more effective! An intro's at
https://www.ibiology.org/genetics-and-gene-regulation/crispr-cas9/
Some applications - Genome engineering (X-Men?), RNA editing (Combating HIV?), Gene drive (eradication of Malaria), Large number of Gene knockouts/Activation/Manipulation (Disease Models?), Bio-medicine (Defense against Superbugs?) etc.
How do you get in on the action? Well, get down to LT003 at 8:30 pm tomorrow night - and experience genetic engineering at a new level.

Hope to see at the next talk!
