Hi all, one of the questions I got here at ICG that I didn't really have an answer to was "When a novel and effective antibiotic is discovered. What are the next steps?" It's a bit of putting the cart before the horse worrying about regulatory hurdles and distribution but probably worth at least starting to think about.

Hi Everybody...

Yes sounds really great with a biostrike googlegroup.

And sorry for not posting anything yesterday, but don't worry besides a little cold we are still alive, feeling well and progressing nicely..

cheers -  Pieter & Malthe

Hi Simon,

Thanks for the great advice. Our eye still needs a bit of training, so perhaps you and others would like to help out:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/pietervanboheemen/tags/plate/
After clicking on a photo you can create rectangles on them by clicking and dragging, for adding notes about specific parts of the picture.
Do you think that there are any Actinomycetes on these plates?

In some of the plates that we created today we added Brentan (miconazolnitrate) as an antifungal agent. So let's see what happens there.

The incubator starts smelling like wet earth, so everything seems promising!

Even as pure cultures, with no competition, Actinomyces are quite slow growing compared to other soil bacteria so it's unilkey any will have grown overnight but you never know!

If the medium that you are using is too rich then you might get a lot of mould growth or overgrowth by other soil bacteria that might stop the growth of any actinomyces or cover them.

Their colonies are quite distinctive and once you get an eye for them they're very easy to differentiate from other bacteria

If mould becomes a problem you could try a specific antifungal. Try an over the counter treatment for Thrush (Canestan)

I hope this helps

Best wishes

Simon

Thanks for all the on the fly peer reviews everyone!

Right now Malthe and I are testing even more protocols, did some shopping at the pharmacy and made additional growth mediums. The plates of yesterday are already showing some interesting colonies.

We are switching platforms for documentation all the time too. Synbiota is not so convenient for real time collaboration (sorry Connor), so that's why we use this google drive as a collab hub: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BzADIb9rSQQ3WTI4Z0pWOGl2bzg&usp=sharing
It allows for faster editing, we'll structure everything on the go towards the end of the week, Synbiota has nice features for that.
Anyway, as more people jump in things will converge to a certain platform along the way. You'll see that by the next email we have adopted another platform again. Perhaps this experience is also worth writing about in BioCoder

Next step in the BioStrike project: identifying which ones are actinomyces. We are working on a guide on the go, any help is much appreciated https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hf8miZtC13zMwe9J3R_55-6pSS1xFnbrNp9dp-NoLK4

I also added Lucas Evers (Waag) to this conversation.

hoied mitenand,

maybe we should summarize the discussion... piratepad? or hackteria wiki?

I thought we were going to use Synbiota?

https://synbiota.com/projects/328/workspace_pages

I'm not wedded to any one platform, but that's where we have most material on this project so far...

Also, any objection to moving the email discussion to a google group or some other place where we can archive the threads?

Patrik
