Q: MS08-030 - does this affect 3rd party stacks like the Toshiba Bluetooth stack? Do 3rd party drivers require the vulnerable Microsoft code to operate?
A: The update is specific to the MS Bluetooth stack on windows client operating systems, and 3rd party Bluetooth stacks may or may not be affected depending on their implementation. For example the Windows Mobile Bluetooth stack is different from the windows stack and is not exposed to the same vulnerability and is not affected. As far as a 3rd party Bluetooth stack goes, if their stack takes a dependency on the Windows Stack than they could be vulnerable.

Since installing the Toshiba blue tooth stack driver on my Sony FE11S I have a problem with the cpu usage in idle state hovering around the 50% mark. There seem to be various processes contributing to this with the main one being tosobex.exe.

If I disable blue tooth in the wireless device switch the problems remains until I do a restart after which - with no bluetooth running - it has gone away.

I followed the upgrade procedure on the sony download site.
I have checked that I have the latest drivers.

Is anyone else having this same problem.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve it as I would like to have bluetooth running.

I'm having the same problem since weeks. I don't know what this could be. I tried almost all possibilities, like older Toshiba Bluetooth Stack drivers, manual registry and file system cleaning and thousands of driver reinstalls. Nothing worked. But in my case the failing process is TosBtMng.exe which runs with 50% CPU usage (means 100% for one core of the core duo).

This week I made a phone call to the Vaio support. Not the best support I ever had. The result of this call: "you have to reinstall your system". Congratulations Sony - this notebook is in a productivity environment and can't be reinstalled right now just for fun. And who ensures that the bluetooth stack will work after reinstall?

I think it should be any other installed software that causes this malfunction. But which? I'm trying to uninstall some relevant applications and look, what's going on.

FYI: My notebook is a VGN-SZ2XP/C running Windows XP SP2.

Please if anybody else has this problem let us know.

Thank you for these links. If I have the time I'm looking forward to review your research results.
BTW: The technical support of the VAIO team called me last week to talk about any other possibilities to solve the problem. But we didn't get to any conclusion. The bluetooth stack thing is pretty complex and deeply integrated into the Windows registry.

I finally found a bluetooth stack with working "high quality audio" and possibly stereo(I don't have stereo speakers to test ). Using Widcomm 5.0.1.2800 from here -28-of-BTW-5-0-1-2800-Compal-zip/3000-2110_4-143931.html

The fIle btaudio.inf was written specifically for Win98/ME. Maybe this inf can be a model for other stacks to have working high quality audio like the 5.1 versions. I'm using IOGEAR USB bluetooth model GBU221, Class 2 Device ID VID_0a5c&PID_2101 which is licensed with this stack. Shows as Broadcom 2405 in device manager.

I started using 'toshiba bluetooth stack' a program made by toshiba that helps with connecting Bluetooth devices to your computer. This finally allows me to connect my Bluetooth module to my computer and works well.

Through researching this issue which other people were having I got told to use a Bluetooth suit called "Toshibas bluetooth stack" which allows me to easily connect it to my computer and allow it to act as a com port perfectly.

This is a good question which myself couldn't get a satisfactory solution. This solution posted here seemed promising although I found out the bluetooth stack supports fewer bluetooth adapters and also some link was taken down.

Switch between different bluetooth stacks in just several seconds or less, with two mouse clicks. No reboot required. Note, Bluetooth Stack Switcher does not contain any bluetooth drivers, all needed bluetooth stacks should be already installed and configured.
