The characters in Demon Slayer are absolutely remarkable and written with so much depth and uniqueness. Each of them possesses their own one-of-a-kind personality and recognizable traits that make them unforgettable to viewers of the show. Demon Slayer certainly boasts some of the most vibrant, brave, and distinctive characters in anime.
This is no accident, Koyoharu Gotouge wrote each character very intentionally and was even inspired by some interesting themes that connect the main characters together. In an interview with Manga Plus, talented Demon Slayer editor Tatsuhiko Katayama elaborated on Gotouge's biggest inspirations. He revealed one surprising common thread that ties Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke, Genya, and Kanao together: the five senses. Smell belonged to Tanjiro, touch went with Inosuke, hearing with Zenitsu, eyesight with Kanao, and taste with Genya. He explained how this small detail could be very easily overlooked, but once pointed out, it's impossible not to notice it throughout the series.
It's intriguing that Gotouge was inspired by such a simple concept as the five senses, but, as Katayama explained, it is extremely obvious throughout the story of Demon Slayer once hearing about it. Giving each hero their own noticeable and unique characteristics makes them stand out and become even more memorable. The sense that goes with each main character also defines their Breathing Style and powers in the anime. The five senses are so well-known and taken for granted that they are often easily overlooked, so it is genius that Gotouge gave these remarkable qualities a new purpose in their character designs.
Smell is a crucial part of Tanjiro's journey from the very beginning. The young hero is able to smell demons and hunt them down if they are nearby, making him an even more effective demon slayer. Other characters have remarked on the true power of Tanjiro's nose and how helpful it is in allowing him to seek out humans, demons, and other creatures and find threats before they reach him. His keen sense of scent is also his greatest tool in finding the evil demon Lord Muzan, who murdered his family and turned his younger sister Nezuko into a demon herself.
Tanjiro's sense of smell isn't the only overpowered sense that comes in handy in Demon Slayer. Inosuke's touch offers him great strength and points to his accomplished physical abilities. Few people can beat the talented Beast Breathing expert in hand-to-hand combat, since this is his most important and noticeable power. When he first meets anyone, even including Tanjiro, he immediately tries to fight them, further pointing to his reliance on head-to-head battles. Zenitsu's hearing is extremely remarkable and saves him from danger many times. Another character with a wonderful sense of hearing is former Sound Hashira, Tengen Uzui.
Although Zenitsu has earned a reputation as incredibly fearful and anxious, his skills can't be overlooked, either. He is able to hear even the quietest sounds and movements a demon makes, making it impossible for anyone or anything to hide from the demon slayer. He killed many demons even while asleep, including the Tongue Demon, utilizing his unique gifts to destroy menacing demons in spite of his nervousness. Kanao has only had a few scenes in the anime, but her expertise is clear. Her astoundingly powerful eyes are her greatest strength in a later battle against Doma, the Upper Rank Two Demon.
Finally, Genya possesses shocking abilities connected with his sense of taste. His most obvious usage of this skill was in the Swordsmith Village arc, when he was able to utilize a demon's powers for a brief few moments after eating the villain. Anytime he eats a demon, he is able to essentially inherit the skills the demon possessed for a little while. Each of these characters' skills is truly groundbreaking and when they all work together, they produce a nearly unstoppable force. Demon Slayer heavily emphasizes the importance of teamwork, and this inclusion of the five senses asserts that even further.
All five senses combined are more powerful than anyone on its own, and this showcases the teamwork message of Demon Slayer flawlessly. Throughout the series, this predominant theme is emphasized. Tanjiro is strong on his own, but even more undefeatable with the assistance of other experienced demon slayers and the unique gifts they possess. As the stakes grow even higher with Lord Muzan attempting to kidnap Nezuko and steal her sun-conquering ability, Tanjiro will certainly need all the help he can get, making this concept of collaboration and teamwork in Demon Slayer even more crucial.
Yondax's song 'Tanjiro, Tokito, Mitsuri e Genya Vs Gyokko e Hantengu' is a vivid and intense narrative that draws heavily from the popular anime and manga series 'Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.' The lyrics depict a fierce battle between the protagonists, Tanjiro, Tokito, Mitsuri, and Genya, against the formidable demons Gyokko and Hantengu. The song captures the essence of the series, where the characters face overwhelming odds, emotional turmoil, and the constant threat of death.
The lyrics are rich with references to the unique abilities and techniques of the characters, such as 'Respirao da nvoa quarta forma' and 'Hi no kami Kagura,' which are signature moves from the series. These references not only highlight the characters' strengths but also their vulnerabilities. The song delves into the emotional struggles of the characters, particularly Tanjiro, who is torn between saving his sister Nezuko and protecting the villagers. This internal conflict is a recurring theme in the series, emphasizing the heavy burden of responsibility and the sacrifices made by the characters.
The song also explores the personalities and motivations of the antagonists, Gyokko and Hantengu. Gyokko's obsession with art and his disdain for weakness are portrayed through lines like 'A arte minha vida (vida) tipo Monalisa (lisa)' and 'Seres fracos so feios vo ser os primeiros a morrer.' Hantengu's multiple emotional states, represented by different forms, add a layer of complexity to the battle, making it not just a physical confrontation but also a psychological one. The song's climax, where Tanjiro faces the ultimate choice and the pain of potential loss, encapsulates the series' themes of perseverance, sacrifice, and the relentless pursuit of justice.
'Tanjiro, Tokito, Mitsuri e Genya Vs Gyokko e Hantengu' is a powerful tribute to 'Demon Slayer,' capturing the emotional depth and intense action that fans of the series cherish. The song's detailed narrative and emotional resonance make it a compelling piece that stands out in Yondax's discography, reflecting the artist's ability to blend storytelling with music in a way that resonates deeply with listeners.
