Im in the market for a new laptop and one of the uses will be tuning. Mainly on MBE and Omex software with potentially FuelTech also moving forward. I build classic british engines and drivelines, recently there is big demand to convert these classic cars to EFI. Which I am doing and now taken to learning the tuning side of things with the HPA standalone tuning course and with the tuner I have used for years as he nears retirement. I was wondering what recommendations people have? I ideally want full size keys (arrow/pageup/down) and not a laptop with half size/dual function keys etc. I know it wants an SSD, full size USB ports and doesn't need vast memory but at the same time I don't mind spending more if I get a better, faster laptop. Are gaming laptops like ASUS TUF F15 any good for the job or am I barking up the wrong tree? I realise personal preferance comes into this but I'm interested to know what works for people. I'm UK based (which may effect what I can affordably acquire).
If I had the need, and the budget, I'd be looking at one of the "toughened", "rugged", or "military spec'" options - especially if it's expected to be used "in the field" at the track, where it could be expected to get wet, knocked around, etc. There are several suppliers who should be able to tailor their product to your requirements - the advantages are significant, but so can the price premium be.
For a laptop using current Engine Management Programs and also looking at logging, I would sacrifice processor speed over screen size and resolution. Most EMP's are not processor hungry and can be run on a relatively low spec processor, but looking at the small screen that has a low resolution all day is tiring.
Currently, I have 2 Dell XPS 15 and that's my suggestion. Base level I7 chip and mid option graphics card. 16 or 32 GB RAM, 512-1TB SSD depending on your needs. I deal with lots of large log files from high speed loggers, but if I was just doing reflash tuning 512 SSD would be PLENTY big. I suggest the high res monitor option to help your eyes and give you more workspace. If you get Dell's top of the line warranty, the service is astonishingly good.
Agreed, Mike, but I can be a bit 'rough' on stuff, and some lappies can be relatively easy to damage, and that would be my preference - or a simple, cheap s/h option I could stick a SSD in, and swap out if (when!) I broke the lappie.
Oh, been keeping an eye on the "Framework" laptops - they're designed to be user repairable and re-configurable, and there seems to be a thriving aftermarket for re-purposing them, too, so a very "green" option - - not quite what the OP is after, though.
I used to buy laptops for schools by the thousands, and mainly used ThinkPad and they are still my personal go to. If you also shop around, you can get them for a reasonably price bump of normal consumer laptops you'll get at your local computer supplier.
The reason I chose a rugged one is that I do track side support for time attack and rally teams, and the conditions in the field are a bit more harsh than on the dyno. I wanted to have a lot of battery time as you don't always have access to an electrical outlet in the service areas. I can even "hot swap" batteries if needed.
I'm just getting into tuning and looking for a new laptop. I was thinking that since most of the softwares used for car tuning don't require high specs I was thinking something like 4gb ram basic processor would work. But since I'm a beginner I'm not too sure.
You're spot on about the PC specs not needing to be super high. One thing I would say is a must is a solid state main hard drive. As the laptop gets moved around a lot and vibrated when its in the car, SSD drives stand up much better than old styles.
Yup, SSD, is a darned good idea. For the RAM, check out the recommendations from the software supplier - 4 should be fine but if it isn't too expensive I'd look at going for 8 (or 6 depending on RAM expansion options) because you'll be using it for other things as well which may want more, and it also allows some headroom for having multiple app's open.
It helps to have a screen that is visible in bright sunlight. Lots of new laptops have a glossy screen that might look nice on the sales floor indoors but will have a lot of glare on a sunny day at the racetrack. Dell business laptops usually have matte screens available, and I imagine other brands will also. It's pretty difficult to find a glare-resistant screen on the shelves at most retail stores.
Because your not going to need a ton of CPU power consider a low voltage processor design. Most reflash packages strictly warn against inverters or dirty power sources if your going to reflash. Its nice to have 8 plus hours of battery on some of these newer models.
As mentioned above some older ECU/Program combinations require old technology such as serial and/or parallel ports. I tune Kalmaker (hard to find nowadays but some people still have it and request tunes) and for that I have a Panasonic Toughbook CF-29 with serial and parallel ports. I have also converted it to SSD and its about to get a 2nd drive (HDD) as a D:/ drive for data. It runs FreeDOS, Windows 7, and Windows 10. It also has USB2 functionality
I was looking at the E15 because it seemed like the best option but seeing as im based in China its been a little tough to find this exact model. I'll head down to Hong Kong though and I'm sure i'll find one. Thanks!
Uh, might want to do some research on those lappies - that said, if any of you chaps have healthier budgets, there are some 'ruggedized' or 'military spec'' lappies available, if you aren't too worried about designer looks.
I can say this is the best purchase I've made for my Diesel shop and for my trucking company. I've had other computer systems but this one is a all in one for equipment my shop deals with even down to Ag and construction equipment. For some of the programs to run them you have to have additional adaptors to go in-between the OB 2 port but still better the all the systems with Snap-On or Mac tools I'm really impressed and this system has already saved thousands in less then two months time.
Got one and had a issue with it and these guys were top notch on getting problem fixed and the new laptop is great would recommend this company and diagnostic laptop to anyone looking for a good fit in a shop or road service
I was pretty skeptical ordering. I connected Esa, jpro, and insite so far with really no issues. I thought finding the program I wanted to be a little confusing at first, but that's really the only trouble I had. I'm positive the investment in going to be well worth it.
Might not have everything but it dose do what I needed. I work in a mix fleet shop, everything from off road to on road every make you can think of.Jtool is awesome, the go to for first diag. It gives you all the specifics for the unit. The other tools will get more specific information. Sold my other so called " HD scanners " not even close to my new HD diesel diagnostic laptop.
