Dear Colleagues:
We have recently been made aware that proposals for Institutes within the
Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) will be reviewed beginning 1
June 1999. R.E.W. Hancock and D.E. Woods met with Dr. Henry Friesen,
President of the Medical Research Council and Chair of the Interim
Governing Council of the CIHR, on 9 March 1999, to discuss the issues
surrounding the formation of a Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
Institute. It is clear that if we are to be in a position to present a
proposal for review by 1 June 1999, we must begin our planning process
very quickly. To initiate this planning process, we would propose that
regional meetings be held in the months of April and May to bring together
the Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Community to discuss the
structure and function of a Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
Institute.
We are seeking your input into this process, and we would hope that you
and your colleagues would agree to participate in these regional planning
sessions so that we might make the Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
Institute a reality. Our current thoughts are that there would be six
divisions within the Institute. These would be HIV/AIDS, Blood-Borne
Diseases, Clinical Trials, Epidemiology and Surveillance, Basic Sciences,
Directed Sciences. Indications are that the general structure of these
virtual Institutes within CIHR will have an Advisory Board to oversee the
activities of the Institute. Each institute will have a Scientific
Director with an administrative staff. Division Heads within the
Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Institute would be Associate
Directors of the Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Institute.
We would propose that regional meetings be held in Vancouver, Calgary,
Toronto, Quebec and Halifax during the last two weeks in April and the
first week of May 1999. We would appreciate hearing from you with some
indication of your willingness to participate in the proposed planning
process and with your suggestions on how we might best move forward toward
the creation of a Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Institute.
Sincerely,
Robert E.W. Hancock, Ph.D.
