Lasker Awards

Biophysical Society members Clay Armstrong, University of Pennsylvania,
Bertil Hille, University of Washington, and Roderick MacKinnon, Rockefeller
University, received the 1999 Albert Lasker Award in Basic Medical
Research.
Each will receive the award for his research on the *functional and
structural architecture of ion-channel proteins, which govern the electrical
potential of membranes...generating nerve impulses, and controlling muscle
contraction, cardiac rhythm, and hormone secretion.

Brandeis University Rosenstiel Award
Roderick MacKinnon, Rockefeller University, was named as this year*s
recipient of Brandeis University*s Lewis S. Rosensteil Award for
Distinguished Work in the Basic Medical Sciences.
The Award was given for MacKinnon*s research into the molecular foundations
of electrical signal generation in neurons and other types of cells.
