I am in charge of a zebrafish facility. Today, I noticed some dead
zebrafish in my facility with ruptured stomach. These fish were alive
and healthy yesterday. The fish in neighboring tanks are perfectly
alright! I am wondering what could cause the death of these fish in
this individual tank. I checked all the water parameters and they are
normal. I assume something specifically wrong in this tank. Please let
me know if someone has noticed this before and could tell me how could
I take precautions in future to stop this kind of incidences.
Many thanks in advance,
Best regards,

Hi Vishal,
It's just a guess but those fish may have been suppressed by a
dominant one, in a confined environnement this kind of aggressive
behaviors occur. The best way too avoid this problem it is to diffuse
the aggressivity of the dominant by adding more fish without having an
overcrowded tank or to add something in the tank that will allowed the
suppressed to be out of sight of the dominant one.
Most of the fish in aquarium have a pyramidal hierarchy, the fish
that are at the bottom are usually smaller and less healthier. This
could give you a hint to find out if my theory is right or wrong. Were
those fish smaller than the one that are still alive?
Hope this will help

I think you might be right because I had only 3 fish in a 3L tank
which is quite low stocking density (5-10 fish/L normally) but I never
knew that we could over-feed zebrafish.
Thanks again for your help,
Best,
Vishal
