Malacological Society of London: MOLLUSCS AND MOLECULES

Advances in molecular biology have had far-reaching consequences for our
understanding of genetics, population biology, phylogeny and evolution of
the Mollusca. The applications of new molecular technology to diverse
aspects of molluscan biology will be explained and discussed at a one-day
meeting in the Palaeontology Demonstration Room at The Natural History
Museum, London, on Wednesday 7 January 1998.

Programme:

10.00-10.30 Coffee
10.30-11.05 David Skibinski (Swansea): Mitochondrial DNA evolution in Mytilus
11.05-11.40 Thierry Backeljau (Brussels): The relationships of molluscs
within the Metazoa: molecules versus morphology
11.40-12.15 Vassiliki Koufopanou (NHM, London): A phylogeny of the patellid
limpets from mitochondrial gene sequences
12.15-12.50 Chris Wade (Nottingham): Towards a molecular phylogeny for the
pulmonate land snails
12.50-14.00 Lunch
14.00-14.35 Craig Wilding (Leeds): Gene flow and speciation in Littorina:
where are the useful sequences?
14.35-15.10 Iain Wilson (Galway): Molecular variation in isolated
populations of Littorina
15.10-15.45 David Rollinson (NHM, London): Molecular markers for
medically-important snails
15.45-16.20 Tea
16.20-16.55 Paul Shaw (Hull): Stock structure in a squid: are molecular
markers helpful?
16.55-17.30 Rupert Lewis (Hong Kong): An application of genetic markers to
questions of conservation in Littoraria ardouiniana
17.30-18.30 General discussion and wine reception

Poster presentations will include:
Gerhard Steiner (Vienna): Phylogeny of pteriomorph bivalves
Ellinor Michel (Amsterdam): The thiarid radiation in Lake Tanganyika

The meeting is open to all, including non-members, and there is no
registration fee. Additional poster presentations are welcome.
