Hi netters,

In promoter studies in eukaryotic cells we use expression of CAT
as a reporter. We measure both the protein and the CAT mRNA
expression. My question is: Does anybody know exactly the size of CAT
mRNA (and maybe a reference in which it is described)? Using a CAT
probe we find three bands ranging from 1000-3000 basepairs.

Thanks,

The answer to your question depends on what else is contained in your
CAT expression vector (i.e., are there additional untranslated sequences).
Most CAT expression vectors contain heterologous splice and polyadenylation
sequences to facilitate proper processing of the RNA. Therefore, the size
of the CAT mRNA will be altered depending on what sequences have been added.
