CBMS 2011, the 24th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems
(http://www.cbms2011.org) sponsored by the IEEE, ACM, IFIP and the BCS will be held at the University
of the West of England, Bristol (Frenchay Campus), from June 27th to 30th 2011. The conference will
provide an international forum for discussing the latest developments in the field of computational
medicine, biomedical informatics and related fields. There will be regular and special track sessions
with technical contributions reviewed and selected by an international programme committee, as well
as keynote talks and tutorials given by leading experts in their fields.
On the first day of the conference, we are fortunate to have two keynote speakers long associated
with HealthGrid conferences; Professor Richard Sinnott from Melbourne and Dr Vincent Breton from the
Institut des Grilles of the CNRS in France. Vincent is this year's Jean-Claude Healy lecturer. The
conference continues on Tuesday morning with Mary Kratz from the University of Michigan and PEPFAR,
the US President's Programme for AIDS Relief, and at the end of the afternoon a sponsored HealthGrid
keynote by Steve Brewer of the EGI. The after-dinner speaker on Tuesday evening will be Professor
Peter Barham of Bristol University.
On Wednesday, the day begins with a keynote by Professor Harold Thimbleby, Swansea, whose research on
usability has shed new light on "medical errors". Finally, two medical experts, Professor Iain
Buchan, University of Manchester, and Professor Frances Griffiths, University of Warwick, bring their
own deep and very distinct interdisciplinary understanding of issues facing modern medicine and
healthcare provision.
The symposium is the premier conference for computational medicine, providing a mechanism for the
exchange of ideas and technologies between academics and industrial scientists, and attracts a
worldwide audience. Registration will include free access to all sessions from the co-located
HealthGrid 2011 conference.

10. Ontologies for Biomedical Systems
Main track sessions will cover Communication and Interfaces in Healthcare, Guidelines, the
Organisation of Healthcare, Signals and Visualisation.
Workshops will be held on a range of topics, including:
� Health Level Seven (HL7) and Related Standards
� Cloud Computing in Biomedicine & Healthcare
� Ontologies in Biomedical Informatics
� Visualization in Medicine
� Student workshops on Ethics, Presentation, Post-doctoral Funding, etc.
