Quantitative Modelling of Cell Metabolism (QMCM) is a new section at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability, headed by Professor Lars Keld Nielsen and supported by a seven year Novo Nordisk Foundation Laureate Research Grant. In QMCM, we focus on developing mathematical models to explore and explain the molecular basis for homeostasis - the self-regulating processes evolved to maintain metabolic equilibrium in organisms.

Studying homeostasis is relevant for the understanding and treatment of complex diseases, particular with the emergence of personalized medicine. It is equally important when we seek to repurpose the cellular machinery for the production of desired chemicals, materials and pharmaceuticals. In this process, the cells' homeostatic control mechanisms must be either disabled or exploited.

The candidate will research new strategies for formulating accurate kinetic models of large metabolic networks. Work will be alongside a group of scientists focused on Omics integration, network reconstruction, and statistical analysis. The overall goal of the unit is to study homeostasis in cells.

Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.

The ideal candidate will have a B.Eng./M.Sc. degree in biological engineering or similar and have achieved outstanding results in their education. Experience in metabolic modelling is an advantage as well as scientific publications.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
