Project description

Your PhD studies will be in the Biophysics program, specifically within the project:Image processing for electron cryo-microscopy.Project leader: Alexey Amunts, amu...@scilifelab.se.

>From the discovery of the DNA structure and through the understanding of various molecular mechanisms, computational algorithms have played a crucial role in interpreting complex data and revealing fundamental biological information. During the last years electron cryo-microscopy (cryo-EM) have become a major source of molecular information, where computational acceleration of cryo-EM data processing will be key in obtaining new insight to the mechanisms of life.

We areseeking highly motivated and enthusiastic candidates with experience in coding for development of new algorithms to accelerate the computational image analysis of cryo-EM data. The applicant is required to show academic excellence, experience in developing programs and automated workflows, very good command of spoken and written English and an ability to work independently.

The developed computational methods will be applied to biological questions studied in the lab and ultimately lead to deeper insights to DNA, RNA and protein function.

The research will be conducted in the new state-of-the-art laboratory that combines experimental work with computational analysis at SciLifeLab.

Qualification requirements

In order to meetthe general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed first and second-cycle courses to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meetthe specific entry requirementsfor acceptance in the Biophysics program, the applicant must have passed courses within the first and second cycles of at least 120 credits in Physics or Chemistry and at the second level, courses of at least 60 credits Biophysics, Biochemistry or Physical Chemistry including a 30 credit Degree Project (thesis).

The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

Selection

The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to successfully complete the program. Important criteria when assessing this capacity are; documented knowledge and skills in the field of the thesis project, written and oral proficiency in English, the capacity for analytical thinking, the ability to collaborate, as well as creativity, initiative, and independence. The assessment will be based on previous experience and grades, the quality of the degree project, references, relevant experience, interviews, and the candidate's written motivation for seeking the position.

Admission Regulations for Doctoral Studies at Stockholm University are available at: www.su.se/rules and regulations.

Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.

The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.

Please note that admission decisions cannot be appealed.

Stockholm University strives to be a workplace free from discrimination and with equal opportunities for all.

Project description

Your PhD studies will be in the Biophysics program, specifically within the project:Functional and structural studies of ion channels.Project leader: Professor Erik Lindahl, erik.l...@scilifelab.se.

We seek a highly skilled candidate with experience of experimental molecular biology or biotechnology to perform functional and structural studies of membrane proteins, in particular ion channel and transporters. The main focus of this PhD project will be to perform functional studies of the ligand-gated ion channels that mediate signaling in our nervous system, in particular by learning and using patch-clamp electrophysiology techniques to measure currents flowing through channels and how this is modulated by lipids and e.g. anesthetics. There will also be opportunities to work on transporters, as well as combine the functional studies with structural determination using cryo-electron microscopy to capture the membrane proteins in specific functional states.

You will join a large cross-disciplinary international team comprising both theoretical and experimental biophysics at Science for Life Laboratory, and the position includes international travel both to our collaborators and conferences.

Successful candidates are expected to have a background in molecular biology, biotechnology, or chemistry, with excellent academic track record. A very good command of English is essential.
