Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is the largest department at Chalmers with research ranging from the most fundamental level to a level close to application in industry and society. The research activities reach from DNA-research and biomaterials to high temperature corrosion, catalysis and recycling. The Department is also heavily committed to teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, as well as postgraduate level in these areas.

Health, natural resources, sustainable energy and materials are some of our lead words and our vision is "Through curiosity and knowledge towards a sustainable world".

We have approximately 300 employees, divided into four research and one administrative division. We are situated at campus Johanneberg in the middle of Gothenburg.

Information about the project

The Division of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Chalmers University of Technology carries out a broad range of research at the frontiers of basic and applied science. For example, we are studying how molecules interact with each other in living cells and how they can capture and transform energy. Within the division various aspects of Physical Chemistry is studied ranging from biophysical chemistry to nanochemistry and the environment encompasses some 20 graduate students creating a creative and energetic atmosphere.

The project that this position is involved in is embedded in the European Eunion H2020 International training network “Chemical reaction networks- CreaNet”. It is aimed at the preparation and characterization of soft matter chemical reaction networks, using microfluidic technology. The project is focused on phospholipid structures, such as nanotubes, vesicles and supported membranes, and uses microfluidic devices for preparation, sensing and manipulation. Proparation of functionalized lipid structures, measurement of properties and characterization of the structures by means of optical techniques, and development and fabrication of microfluidic chip devices.

Major responsibilities

Your major responsibilities as PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop original scientific concepts, based upon the project framework, and communicate the results of your research verbally. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers undergraduate level, or performing other equivalent duties corresponding to maximum of 20 percent of working hours. The PhD work requires travel and extended research visits in several European academic and commercial laboratories.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications

- Completed MSc or equivalent degree in physics, physical chemistry or materials science

- Practical knowledge of, and interest in soft matter

- Hands-on knowledge of optical microscopy and related techniques

- Working programming knowledge for image analysis and device control (Matlab, Phython or similar)

- Successfully completed programming education during undergraduate studies is meritorious

- Experience with measurement and characteriation of soft matter interfaces is of advantage

To be succesful you need to be independent, self-motivated, ambitious, and willing to travel within Europe. As Chalmers is a highly international workplace, an advanced level of English in reading, writing and speaking is required.

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master’s level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field.
