SciLifeLab isthe Swedish National Centre for molecular biosciences, with focus on health andenvironmental research. The array of infrastructure and facilities available atthe centre continuously evolves to maintain global competitiveness, providingaccess to the most innovative instrumentation and expertise, covering areas ofgenomics, proteomics, metabolomics, single cell biology, bioimaging, chemicalbiology, drug discovery, diagnostics and bioinformatics. SciLifeLab providesaccess to frontline life science technologies and coordinates aninterdisciplinary research community with a unique infrastructure offacilities, with an ultimate goal to translate fundamental biological insightsinto lasting societalbenefits.

Project description

Your studies in Biochemistry will be in the project:Methods for spatial molecular tissue profiling.Project Leader: Professor Mats Nilsson,mats.n...@scilifelab.se.

The Molecular Diagnostics group, headed by Professor MatsNilsson, is located at SciLifeLab in Solna and focuses on developing molecularanalysis tools for research and diagnostics. The group has an interdisciplinaryapproach and collaborates with groups in physics, mathematics, biology, engineering and medicine. The group demonstrates applications of the developed methodsin cancerand neuroscience, and with an ambition to develop novel tumor- andinfectious disease diagnostics. We haverecently developed a method for spatial gene expression profiling and mappingof molecularly defined cells in sections of different tissues including tumors(in situ sequencing). The group is affiliated to the Department of Biochemistryand Biophysics, wheretheresearch projects span across a broad range of topics covering various aspectsof structure and function of biological systems.

The university has initiated a "paired PhD-studentprogram" aiming to strengthen the applied research at the Department ofMathematics. Mats Nilsson (Biochemistry) and Joanna Tyrcha (Mathematics) hereannounce one PhD student each within this program. We plan to recruit two PhDstudents that should be able to speak each other's language and jointly work ondeveloping statisticaland computational methods for spatial molecular tissueprofiling. Nilsson's student should have strong computational training with adequatebackground in biology, helpful for the generation of data and to understand theunderlying biological questions that the data is meant to answer. Tyrcha'sstudent should have a deep understanding of the statistical methods, and shouldhave enoughunderstanding of biology to be able to understand the limitationsof the data and the purpose of the experiment.

We look for a PhD student with a Master's degreewithin a subject that gives a deep understanding of biology, but that also has relevantknowledge in mathematics/statistics, and with documented programming skills. ThePhD student will work closely with the corresponding student in Tyrcha's groupand with some other co-workers in Nilsson's group. Tyrcha will be the co-supervisor.

We look for a highly motivated co-worker with a teamspirit that will be working together with mostly international creativeco-workers (20 persons from 12 countries).

Qualification requirements

In order to meetthe general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meetthe specific entry requirements, for acceptance in the Biochemistry program the applicant must have passed courses within the first and second cycles of at least 120 credits in Biochemistry/Life Science, including at least 15 credits Biochemistry at the second cycle level and a Degree Project (thesis) also in Biochemistry of 30 credits.

The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

Selection

The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to successfully complete the program. Important criteria when assessing this capacity are; documented knowledge and skill in the field of the thesis project, written and oral proficiency in English, the capacity for analytical thinking, the ability to collaborate, as well as creativity, initiative, and independence. The assessment will be based on previous experience and grades, the quality of the degree project, references, relevant experience, interviews and the candidate's written motivation for seeking the position.

Admission Regulations for Doctoral Studies at Stockholm University are available at: www.su.se/rules and regulations.

Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.

The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.

Please note that admission decisions cannot be appealed.

Stockholm University strives to be a workplace free from discrimination and with equal opportunities for all.
