Dear Sir/Madam ,
Greetings from the Symbiosis Statistical Institute!

It is with immense pleasure that I invite you to join us for the III Prof. V S Huzurbazar Memorial Lecture scheduled on Saturday, 7th March 2026 at 4:00PM at Vishwabhavan Auditorium, which will be followed by interaction and high tea.

We are deeply honoured to have Professor Shripad Tuljapurkar from Stanford University to deliver the Memorial Lecture on the

Topic: 'Certainty and Uncertainty: Demographics, Inequality, Markets'

About Prof Tuljapurkar:
Shripad Tuljapurkar is Professor of Biology and Morrison Professor of Population Studies at Stanford University, and a member of the Center for the Demography and Economics of Aging at the University of California, Berkeley. He is internationally known for demographic work on forecasting and pensions, and for ecological work on the stochastic dynamics of natural populations. He led a study on aging for the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population, served on the Technical Advisory Panel to the US Social Security Administration, was president of the Evolutionary Demography Society, and has been a consultant to numerous actuarial societies and pension agencies around the world. He received the 1996 Mindel Sheps Award from the Population Association of America, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 1998, and the Weldon Memorial Prize from Oxford University in 2017.
______________
Outline of talk:
First, India is compared with China and the US in labor force and GDP growth. I explain the demographic dividend, why it's uncertain, and why it's only a potential dividend. Then I discuss the resilience of rich aging societies and the need to rethink immigration.
Next is inequality. Evidence from surveys in China is pessimistic. Other evidence shows inequality in India is perhaps worse.
Then I show how demography is important in defining market segments for young and old. Finally, I talk about the challenges of human versus environmental development.

Looking forward to having you for this memorial lecture.

Peace,
