“Island Biogeography and Macroecology”

 

Inscriptions are now open for the next Summer Course at the University of Azores. The event will take place at the Campus of Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira island, from July 18th to July 29th 2022.

 

It will be a comprehensive course (70 hours, 8ECTS) offering an overview of different island’s biogeography and macroecological topics, focused on terrestrial ecosystems.

It offers a strong theoretical background, presented by some of the most prestigious scientists in the field, that will provide innovative methodologies regarding field sampling and analytical tools.

 

During the two-week course the students will follow the steps of a scientific project to get the best research questions, objectives and hypotheses, using the appropriate selection of methods, including collection, analysis and discussion of data/results.

The course is focused on the large-scale patterns of taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional diversity.

 

Led by the reputable Professor Paulo Borges, Director of the Azorean Biodiversity Group cE3c of the University of the Azores, the course will feature other distinguishable guests, both local (Rosalina Gabriel, Rui Bento Elias, Isabel R. Amorim, Mário Boieiro, Gabor Pozgai and Noelline Tsafack) as well as international (François Rigal from the University of Pau, France; José Maria Fernández-Palacios from University of La Laguna, Canary Islands, Spain, Holger Kreft from the University of Göttingen, Germany; Robert J. Whittaker from the University of Oxford, England, U.K.; Simone Fattorini from the University of Aquila, Italy; Ana Santos from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain, Brent Emerson from the Island Ecology and Evolution Res. Group-IPNA-CSIC, Canary Islands, Spain; Joaquin Hortal from the Natural History Museum in Madrid (MNCN), Spain, Luís Borda-de-Água from CIBIO - Porto, Portugal; Pedro Cardoso from the Natural History Museum, University of Helsinki, Finland; and Rosemary Gillespie from the University of California, Berkeley, USA)

Deadline for Applications: April 15th, 2022.

 

Portuguese and American students are illegible for financial support through FLAD. Prices include flight to and from Terceira island, and a shared room in a 3-star hotel or equivalent.
