It's no secret that John Denver was fond of the state of Colorado, and few songs describe the feeling one gets when standing on a "Colorado rocky mountain high" better than his 1972 song, "Rocky Mountain High." The song was inspired by Denver's own experience in Colorado, but more specifically, by an exceptionally awe-inspiring night in the beautiful state. It was during that night that he witnessed a Perseid meteor shower while camping with friends (including his then-wife Annie Martell) at Williams Lake. The singer wrote about the experience in his autobiography.
Many of the visuals one hears in the Rocky Mountain high lyrics come from this night. Lines such as "I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky," "The shadow from the starlight is softer than a lullabye," and "Serenity of a clear blue mountain lake" are inspired from this experience Denver had in the state. Denver began writing the song on his own and then brought it to collaborator Mike Taylor, after which he says "the whole thing came together." The song became so impactful to Denver that he changed the album title from Mother Nature's Son to Rocky Mountain High.
Although the song serves as a fitting and serene tribute to a beautiful place, it did withstand its share of misconstrued controversy. Not long after the song was released, radio stations began banning it on the assumption that the "high" in "Rocky Mountain High" was a reference to marijuana use. Denver later testified in Congress, stressing that the song was simply describing the high one gets from experiencing the beauties he experienced.
He was born in the summer of his 27th year
Coming home to a place he'd never been before
He left yesterday behind him, you might say he was born again
You might say he found a key for every door
The song is hinting at a depression... a mourning for the loss of his childhood. It's the point in life when you realize that you aren't a child anymore, you're really born and raised... that your parents have finished taking care of you and now you get to live on your own or it's now your time to take care of them.
This means accepting yourself, flaws and all, jadedness in all its glory, ("I cheat the light to check my face. It's slightly harder than last year.") realizing that you've adjusted your goals and dreams as life has taken over ("I still go dreams, they're not the same. They don't fly as high as the used to.") and lost the person that you swore you would be or used to be, ("I saw my friend, he's in my head, and he said, "You don't remember me do you?").
Every word on this 2-CD set comes from Scripture and exalts the name of Jesus! The prophetic words of Isaiah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi will help you anticipate the coming Messiah. And then, in the words of Matthew and Luke, the angels suddenly appear to the shepherds singing that familiar chorus, Glory to God in the highest! Peace on earth, good will towards men.
Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation
Sing, all ye citizens of Heaven above!
Glory to God, glory in the highest
O come, let us adore Him
O come, let us adore Him
O come, let us adore Him
Christ the Lord.
Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning
Jesus, to thee be glory given!
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing!
O come, let us adore Him
O come, let us adore Him
O come, let us adore Him
Christ the Lord.
Their show gets real high ratings, they think they have a hit.
There might even be a spin off, but they're not sure 'bout that.
If they ever watch T.V. again, it'd be too soon for them.
Bob never yells about the picture now, he's having too much fun.
Angels from the realms of glory, wing your flight o'er
all the earth; ye who sang creation's story, now proclaim
Messiah's birth: Come and worship, come and
worship, worship Christ, the newborn King.
Shepherds, in the field abiding, watching o'er your
Flocks by night, God with us is now residing; yonder
Shines the infant light: Come and worship, come and
worship, worship Christ, the newborn King.
Sages, leave your contemplations, brighter visions beam
Afar; seek the great Desire of nations, ye have seen his Natal star: Come and worship, come and worship,
worship Christ, the newborn King.
The first Noel the angel did say was to certain poor
shepherds in fields as they lay; in fields where they
lay keeping their sheep, on a cold winter's night that
was so deep. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, born is the King
King of Israel.
They look-ed up and saw a star shining in the east,
beyond them far; and to the earth it gave great light,
and so it continued both day and night. Noel, Noel,
Noel, Noel, born is the King of Israel.
And by the light of that same star three Wise Men
came from country far; to seek for a king was their
intent, and to follow the star wherever it went.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, born is the King of Israel.
This star drew nigh to the northwest, o'er Bethlehem
it took its rest; and there it did both stop and stay,
right over the place where Jesus lay.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, born is the King of Israel.
Then entered in those Wise Men three, full reverently
upon the knee, and offered there, in his presence,
their gold and myrrh and frankincense.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, born is the King of Israel.
Good Christian friends, rejoice with heart and soul
and voice; give ye heed to what we say: News, news!
Jesus Christ is born today! Ox and ass before him
bow, and he is in the manger now. Christ is born
today, Christ is born today.
Good Christian friends, rejoice with heart and soul
and voice; now ye hear of endless bliss: News,
news! Jesus Christ was born for this! He hath opened
heaven's door, and ye are blest forevermore. Christ
was born for this, Christ was born for this.
Good Christian friends, rejoice with heart and soul
and voice; now ye need not fear the grave: News,
news! Jesus Christ was born to save! Calls you one
and calls you all to gain an everlasting hall. Christ
was born to save, Christ was born to save!
Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn
King; peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and
sinners reconciled!" Joyful, all ye nations rise, join
the triumph of the skies; with the angelic host proclaim
"Christ is born in Bethlehem!"
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King!"
Christ, by highest heaven adored; Christ, the
everlasting Lord; late in time behold him come,
offspring of a virgin??s womb. Veiled in flesh the
Godhead see; hail the incarnate Deity, pleased
with us in flesh to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King!"
Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the
Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all he
brings, risen with healing in his wings. Mild he
lays his glory by, born that we no more may die,
born to raise us from the earth, born to give us
second birth. Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King!"
Flocks were sleeping, shepherds keeping vigil
till the morning new Saw the glory, heard the
story, tidings of a gospel true. Thus rejoicing,
free from sorrow, praises voicing, greet the
morrow: Christ the babe was born for you.
Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here came the wise men from out the Orient
land. The King of Kings lay thus in lowly
manger, In all our trials born to be our friend.
Refrain.
For Christ is born of Mary, and gathered all
above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep
their watch of wondering love. O morning
stars together, proclaim the holy birth, and
praises sing to God the King, and peace to
all on earth!
O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us,
we pray; cast out our sin, and enter in, be
born in us today. We hear the Christmas
angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to
us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!
I told Althea I'm a roving son, and I was born to be a bachelor.
Althea told me, okay, that's fine, so now I'm trying to catch her.
Can't talk to you without talking to me, we're guilty of the same old thing.
Been talking alot about less and less and forgetting the love we bring.
I know I'm no angel, my prospects are high
As the flood line in summer when the river's gone dry
But I'll roll up my shirt-sleeves and make my best shot
To show how I love you, believe it or not
Going where the wind don't blow so strange
Maybe off on some high cold mountain range (note 1)
Lost one round but the price wasn't anything
A knife in the back and more of the same
All the things I planned to do, I only did half way
Tomorrow will be Sunday, born of rainy Saturday
There's some satisfaction in the San Francisco rain
No matter what comes down, the mission always looks the same
On the day that I was born Daddy sat down and cried
I had the mark just as plain as day, I could not be denied
They say that Cain caught Abel rolling loaded dice
Ace of spades behind his ear and him not thinking twice
