Dear BioHackathon 2023 participants,
Today, we'd like to offer you a glimpse into the enchanting beauty of Shodoshima, our beloved venue for this year's BioHackathon. Shodoshima is the second largest island in the Seto Inland Sea, surrounded by over 20 small islands.
Our hackathon venue, the 'Olivian Shodoshima Hotel', has been ranked third nationwide as a 'beautiful sunset inn'. Make sure to enjoy the breathtaking views from the Olivian-no-Yu hot spring, a feature of the hotel."
Shodoshima is home to numerous tourist attractions, including Kankakei Gorge, one of Japan's three most beautiful gorges and a symbol of the Setonaikai National Park. The Kankakei Ropeway, connecting the foot of the mountain to the summit, is the only one in Japan where you can view the sky, sea, and gorge all at once.
In addition, Shodoshima has a long history in salt production and has been making soy sauce since the Edo period. Even today, some soy sauce factories and warehouses built during the Meiji era are still in use. These preserved industrial landscapes form the area known as "Shoyu no Sato" (Soy Sauce Village).
While Kagawa Prefecture is famous for its Udon noodles, another delicacy from Shodoshima is Somen noodles. "Shodoshima Somen" has a history of over 400 years and is considered one of Japan's three major somen noodles, along with "Miwa Somen" from Nara Prefecture and "Harima Somen" also known as "Ibonoito" from Hyogo Prefecture.
