Subject: List of student funding agencies and update on IBS Best dissertation/Thesis synopsis Award

Dear IBS Members,

A new online resource for Early Career biogeographers has been put together by your previous Student-at-Large, Ana Santos, and is available for download at http://www.biogeography.org/html/Resources/index.html.  The list contains information about available scholarships and fellowships from more than 20 countries worldwide.  Please consider adding to the list if you can think of more opportunities!

Also, your current Student-at-Large - Leticia Ochoa-Ochoa - and the Early Career Committee would like to announce an update about the Best dissertation/Thesis synopsis award that can be applied for at http://www.biogeography.org/html/Meetings/2014ECC/ThesisAward.html :

Note for Best dissertation/Thesis synopsis award:

In order for the synopses to be considered for publication in Frontiers of Biogeography the final drafts of the dissertation volume have to be ready and the PhD degree must have been awarded at the time of publication. Frontiers can grant an embargo on publication until the degree is effective and papers resulting from the dissertation have a DOI or are available online. Please ensure that all chapters are adequately covered in the text; that is, all main results are included in the abstract. For more information about the Best Dissertation/Thesis Synopsis Award contact Leticia Ochoa-Ochoa at thi...@yahoo.com or any other member of the IBS Early Career Committee: Sandra Nogue (sandr...@gmail.com), Carolina Tovar (carolin...@zoo.ox.ac.uk), Marta Jarzyna (jarz...@msu.edu), Guida Santos (ana.margarida.c.santos@googlemail.com), and/or Andres Lira Noriega (aliran...@yahoo.com).
To ensure a timely answer, please make sure that the subject of the email says Thesis Synopsis Award.

The conference will take place in beautiful Canberra, ACT, Australia between the 7th and the 10th of January 2014, and aims to bring together early career researchers, along with more experienced scientists, working on many aspects of biogeography.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE IS JULY 30

To submit your abstract, please follow the directions on the conference website:
http://www.biogeography.org/html/Meetings/2014ECC/index.html
CONFIRMED KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:
Prof Craig Moritz (ANU)
Dr Simon Ferrier (CSIRO)
Dr Michael Kearney (UniMelb)

As well as the above speakers, there will be some great workshops offered Tuesday January 7th, including:
1)  Introduction to R for Biogeographers
2)  Modeling turnover using generalized dissimilarity modelling
3)  Concepts and methods for modelling species distributions
Registration will open soon and you may submit an abstract prior to registering for the conference. Registration rates will be reduced for IBS members.
Student support for IBS members is available through awards offered by the IBS, and an award will be presented for the best thesis in biogeography. To apply for these awards, please follow the instructions given on the conference website.

主题: Best Dissertation/Thesis Synopsis Award - International Biogeography Society

Dear IBS Member

Frontiers of Biogeography and the IBS Early Career Committee are pleased to invite submissions for Doctoral Dissertation/Thesis synopses from early career biogeographers (up to 2 years after graduation from a PhD program).  All submitted synopses will be considered for publication in Frontiers of Biogeography, those selected then going through the journal’s usual peer-review process.  The target issue for publication is v5.3, September 2013. Submission deadline is July 30th, 2013.

Submitted synopses will compete for the Best Dissertation/Thesis Summary Award presented at the 2014 IBS Early Career Conference in Canberra, Australia. The Award has been established in order to recognize and publicize outstanding doctoral work in the field of biogeography. The recipient of the Award will have an opportunity to give a talk at the Early Career Conference and will be presented with a certificate, a commemorative plate, and 500USD to help with the travel expenses to the Conference.

Guidelines for dissertation synopses

‘Long synopses’ of recently completed PhD dissertations/theses should include a brief summary of the state of the field as well as the contributions provided by the dissertation/thesis. Synopses should clearly articulate how the chapters (either published or unpublished) fit together and warrant attention as a single body of work. The length of the submission should not exceed 2,500 words, with approximately 2-3 paragraphs of introduction, 2-3 paragraphs of methods, 1-2 of results and 1-2 paragraphs of discussion. The dissertation synopsis should be submitted within 2 years of graduation from the PhD granting institution and should clearly list chapters already published (including citation) and those yet to be published at the time of submission. An embargo for the publication of the dissertation synopsis may be granted upon request if one or several chapters have not yet been accepted for publication by the time of the final acceptance of the manuscript.

All synopses will be peer reviewed based on the following criteria:

  1. Novelty / originality work (30%)
  2. Clarity / specificity of the research questions and hypotheses (10%)
  3. Adequate Theoretical framework according to the objectives (10%)
  4. Originality of the data (10%)
  5. Methodological tools (10%)
  6. Scope and limitations of the research (10%)
  7. Relevance of the results to the research question (10%)
  8. Relevance / impact in the field of biogeography (10%)

Frontiers of Biogeography will waive fees for any authors responding to this call and publishing in the September issue (Frontiers' fee policy reduced-rates for IBS members and the fee-waiver policy at the bottom of the Information for Authors page).
