Want to help wildlife? The San Luis National Wildlife Refuge is having a planting event inside their Tule Elk enclosure! The work is only a few hours and afterwards there's plenty of birds and elk to see on the trails and auto-tour routes.
Enjoy the Central Valley while its cool and has tons of migratory birds!

Visit the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge on March 5th to help plant native trees and shrubs.  The planting event will take place at a riparian habitat restoration site INSIDE the Tule Elk enclosure on the Refuge.  The species planted will include willows, California rose and blackberry, and coyote bush.  We have a lot of plants to put in the ground and are hoping for many volunteers to participate!

Date: Saturday, March 5th
Location: San Luis National Wildlife Refuge - meet at the Visitor Center parking lot (7376 S. Wolfsen Rd. Los Banos, CA 93635)
Time: Meet at 9:00 a.m.  Work activities will last 3-4 hours.

Volunteer planting events are terrific opportunities to interact with Refuge staff and learn about habitat restoration strategies and the importance of native vegetation.  Teachers have found that volunteer planting days make great extra credit opportunities for their students.

Please be certain to dress for the weather and wear clothing that can get dirty, as well as sturdy, waterproof footwear (for example, hiking boots or rubber boots).

There is no need for individuals to rsvp to participate -- simply meet us in the Visitor Center parking lot at 9:00 a.m.  Groups and classes are welcome, but please let us know if you plan to attend with a class or group.  Feel welcome to contact me by telephone or email for more information and/or directions (jack_...@fws.gov or 209/826-3508).  Driving directions and additional information about the San Luis NWR can also be found on our website (www.fws.gov/refuge/san_luis).

We hope to see you there!

- Jack
