I am holding a training course in San Diego which provides Protected Species Observer (also known as Marine Mammal Observer) certification on July 16-17. I was wondering if some Tri-Beta members would be interested obtaining this professional certification. This training is approved by the federal agencies Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and Bureau of Safety & Environmental Enforcement to provide Protected Species Observer certification for the Gulf of Mexico, and is often accepted in various other industries and regions where mitigation for protected species is needed. PSOs monitor for marine mammals and sea turtles, and advise on the measures required to reduce impacts to the animals worldwide. This course also includes a field component (vessel trip) to complement classroom instruction, allowing students to acquire experience identifying the animals at sea.
The course examines the regulations for reducing seismic survey impacts to marine mammals and sea turtles, and how to visually locate and identify the animals. I am offering this course at a discounted rate of $725 for students and recent graduates (normal cost $800). Lunch is provided each day, along with various identification guides, regulatory documents, advice on applying to PSO positions, and a three-hour whale watch trip from Mission Bay. Please find the flyer for the course in the attached file.
Thank you,
