Hi BioDCASE community,
Please forward this opportunity and help us spread the word.
If you're interested in pushing the boundaries of environmental AI, Dr. Ian McFadden and I are recruiting a fully funded PhD student (UK fees) to join us at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) starting September 2026.
The project is titled "Decoding and mapping Earth's species interactions with ecological AI." Rather than focusing solely on species identification, the goal of this project is to build analysis pipelines that monitor and map ecological functions and interactions (e.g., predation, competition, mutualism). The student will leverage large-scale multimodal datasets (including raw bioacoustics, citizen science video, and camera traps) to train multi-modal AI models capable of detecting these dynamic interactions in the wild.
Key Details:
The Team: Co-supervised by Dr. Ian McFadden (Computational Ecology) and Dr. Iran Roman (Centre for Multimodal AI).
Ideal Candidate: Someone with a strong background in computer science, mathematics, electronic engineering, or quantitative ecology.
Funding: Fully funded 3-year scholarship covering home tuition fees and an annual tax-free stipend (£23,805) for UK-eligible students.
Application Deadline: April 18, 2026.
You can read the full project description and find the application portal here:
If you are a Master's students or recent graduate and this sounds interesting, please get in touch.
Best,
Iran
