Dear Colleague, Last week, we announced the awards from the Innovations in Gram-Negative Antibiotic Discovery challenge. We wanted to make sure the entire Grand Challenges community saw the news, because it exemplifies what Grand Challenges is trying to do. "Grand Challenges is a global partnership that catalyzes innovation, serving as a platform for partners to collaborate and drive lasting impact." These awards demonstrate every clause in that sentence. Global partnership: The challenge was jointly issued and is jointly funded by Novo Nordisk Foundation, Wellcome, and the Gates Foundation. Catalyzes innovation: Antibiotic resistance is the third leading cause of death in the world, and the current solution set is not up to the task. Platform for collaboration: The awardees are coming together in a consortium, the Gram-Negative Antibiotic Discovery Innovator, that will dramatically change the R&D ecosystem in this area. Lasting impact: The consortium will develop and share new methods, process, and tools that continue to deliver results over time. Grand Challenges links dozens of funders, thousands of researchers, and hundreds of research institutions around the world, making it easier for an aligned, inclusive global R&D community to tackle urgent priorities as they arise.
