"planting 10-20kg of biochar in your garden could offset the carbon from a five-mile return commute in a car for a month."

...One of its most obvious uses is in tree planting, which is poised to become a major activity in the UK over the coming years. The Conservatives have pledged to plant 30m trees a year, the Liberal Democrats have promised 60m a year, while Labour’s manifesto pledges an ambitious tree-planting programme.

“They bandy around these big numbers, but will they actually talk about the survival rates?” ... "Up to 80% of trees planted along the HS2 rail route died after last summer’s drought." ... “If you plant 1m trees, great, but if 800,000 die, was it really worth it? If you can just do one thing to guarantee the survival of a tree going in the ground then maybe trees can save the planet.”

“It really does seem to offer some quite marked benefits in terms of tree health, early stage growth and nutrient management, Turning this particular part of the tree into biochar allows the nutrients to be returned to the forest sites in the process of replanting.”
    -    Dr Saran Sohi, UK Biochar Research Centre, Edinburgh

“In order to scale up the technology, you’d have to plant woods everywhere, and obviously you can understand the impact that would have on the land that we need to grow crops.” ... "eventually biochar could be made from green waste in urban areas – everything right down to the banana skin lying on your desk" ... "But ... biochar could offset 1bn tonnes of carbon a year"

Climate action at a tipping point

LIVELIHOODS IS LAUNCHING A THIRD CARBON FUND TO ACCELERATE CLIMATE ACTION & DELIVER SOCIAL IMPACT AT SCALE
Companies from the private sector are increasingly engaged in driving climate action by transforming their business models towards sustainability and through taking strong commitments to achieve carbon neutrality.
As the private sector ramps-up on both its carbon footprint reduction and compensation commitments, they are also exploring innovative financial solutions to accompany their transition towards carbon neutrality.

Capitalizing on a 10-year track-record with corporate investors, Livelihoods is launching a 3rd Carbon Fund to help corporates, financial investors and cities accelerate climate action and deliver social impact at scale. The Third Livelihoods Carbon Fund (LCF3) has a deployment target of €100 million. Its goal? Improve the lives of 2 million beneficiaries in rural areas, while delivering up to 23 million carbon offsets over the entire duration of the fund. In the continuity of the Livelihoods Carbon Fund #1 (LCF1, 2011) and the Livelihoods Carbon Fund #2 (LCF2, 2017) LCF3 will invest in community-based solutions for the restoration of natural ecosystems, agroforestry and regenerative agriculture.
LEARN MORE ABOUT LIVELIHOODS CARBON FUND #3
"The Livelihoods investment model is now mature enough to scale up”

With 10 years of experience in investing in major carbon projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America, Livelihoods is launching a new impact fund to meet the needs of corporates and financial investors. Click here to read our full interview with Bernard Giraud, President and Co-founder of Livelihoods Venture.

5 QUESTIONS TO BERNARD GIRAUD ON LCF3 INVESTMENT MODEL

WATCH THE VIDEO
Our investment model relies on 10 years of experience in designing large scale products where carbon offsets meet with improved livelihoods for the rural communities. Ten years ago, together with a Senegalese NGO Océanium, we mobilized 100,000 villagers for the restoration of their degraded mangrove. They planted 10,000 ha, the equivalent of Paris surface, with 80 million mangrove trees. An impact survey undertaken in 2018 amongst these same communities highlighted the benefits the restoration brought to their daily lives:  95% of villagers reported at least one positive impact of the mangrove restoration in their lives, including 4, 200 tons of more fish per year and increased yields. We can see the same dynamics across our portfolio of projects in India, Kenya, Peru, Indonesia, Guatemala, Burkina Faso.
