Do you already have any knowledge about Graph Databases and Titan DB in particular?

I came across bio4j while surfing the project list on GSCOC 2014. I was intrigued by the concept, but lack the domain knowledge that might be necessary to start making any contributions to this project.

Would you guys be open to helping me get started both with the domain and the technology side of the things ?  

My core interests are algorithms, data structures. I can work with java, I'm a beginner at Scala and have experience of working with almost all major flavours of relational databases.
