NYSR, EMO and Sociology Department Friends,

I wanted to pass along this recent bit of information regarding the recent exposure of FBI surveillance of political activity at SUNY:

Documents show the spying abuses of the FBI’s “Campus Liaison Program” in which the FBI in Albany and the Syracuse Joint Terrorism Task Force disseminated information to “sixteen (16) different campus police officials,” and then “six (6) additional campus police officials.”  Campus officials were in contact with the FBI for information on OWS.  A representative of the State University of New York at Oswego contacted the FBI for information on the OWS protests and reported to the FBI on the SUNY-Oswego Occupy encampment made up of students and professors.

While these documents obtained by the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund only offer a small glimpse of the program and only detail one incident relating to SUNY-Oswego, you can also find a leaked powerpoint briefing about the program on the website publicintelligence.net.

I have drafted Freedom of Information Act (federal) request to the FBI and Freedom of Information Law (New York State) request to SUNY for all documents pertaining to the FBI program. I've never sent a FOIA request to the FBI and I suspect it will take a while to get any return. I have done a number of FOIL requests to SUNY and I should get a return on this request within a month or two. Of course, I will share anything I receive from these open records requests. I wanted to share this becuase, with the NYSR retreat upcoming, their is an opportunity to organize a statewide response to the exposure of political policing at SUNY.

Thanks for this Brendan, I'll be sure that it gets brought up (at least) at the retreat.
