Hello All,
Shehryar has just told me that it was suggested at the last meeting that NYSR Times be subsumed by EMO Zine. I have to admit that I was surprised by this, seeing as how I was never approached on this issue. As Eduardo and myself have been the main editors in the past, I think this a necessary step in so drastic a measure. What are the reasons for wanting to combine them? I am not opposed, per say, but I need more information on the reasoning behind this. I also need to know who will be organizing this and what the criteria for submissions will be, ie. content, if NYSR Times name will be attached to it. This has always been a carefully executed project that the NYSR Times committee has put forth and I wish it to remain that if it will continue to exist in name.

Sincerely,
Victoria

Hi Victoria,

The idea was to publish a joint issue of EMO Zine/NYSR Times to have to pass out at the Workers' Rights teach-in on December 6th. We wouldn't have time to get together both publications before the end of the year, so it was proposed as a temporary solution. In addition, if NYSR Times is to be printed using EMO funds, EMO should have some sort of clear link to the publication. The reason you were not approached about this is because it was a decision made by consensus at the meeting Thursday and you were not present, nor have you been in contact for the last month. If you take issue with the use of the NYSR Times name on the publication, then the name can be pulled.

Hello Julia,
Thanks for getting back to me on this issue. At the beginning of the year we discussed that if NYSR Times were to be printed using EMO funds, that a small endorsement on the back page in small lettering would suffice. Now it seems that has changed. Not a big deal, but again, I have to ask, if EMO would like to co-publish something in conjunction with NYSR Times, I will need to know what the requirement are for submission. While I might not have been at the last meeting, I think that has nothing to do with not asking the editorial committee for permission to attach the name NYSR Times. And, again, I am not against a co-publication, but I will need to review all of the submissions before printing to ensure the content fits with NYSR Times. When are you and others planning to work on this, because I have not been informed of any of it.

Hi Victoria,

From my recollection, the small endorsement on the back was not the compromise we had reached, but rather your suggestion before there was any discussion on the matter. Regardless, the articles being written for the upcoming issue have to do with public education, student-worker rights and public-private partnerships. Three people signed up to write articles at the meeting. The articles are due at the end of the month, and the plan was to edit them for language on a Google doc because that seemed the most effective way to collaborate on editing. The team that volunteered to take that up at the meeting included myself, Melissa, Toivo and Kaan, but anyone else interested was welcome to help out. My understanding is that decisions would be made with group rather than individual oversight.

This was all in the meeting notes sent out Thursday night, which you were copied on. This was not an attempt to go behind anyone's back, but rather a decision that had to be made in order to move forward. Again, if you are opposed to this use of the NYSR Times name, it can be removed.
