Oh how I loved secret codes when I was a kid. The ability to write a coded letter without anyone but the recipient was just plain fun. Today on Kids Activities Blog we have 5 secret codes for kids to write their own coded letter.

Just like seen above in the half-reversed alphabet, you can assign numbers to letters in a tricky way and then substitute those numbers for the letters in the words and sentences. The most common numbers the alphabet 1-26, but that is easy to decode.

I have set up a basic app with angular-fullstack and am exploring some tasks I would like to know how to do. Specifically, I would like to add an additional form element to the user sign up process so that not just anyone can sign up, but only those who provide a pre-determined security code that is shared verbally. If the code entered is invalid, the new user should not be created and (optionally) some message is returned to the user.

In my form, I add the additional field and assign ng-model="secret". The form points to the controller's register function, so I also add in the new input's value to the argument being passed to Auth.createUser:

There are 2 red flags. In order to actually create a user, you dont need a secret key. The secret is required for security purposes for an actual person to create a user. So that key logic should be with the other actual-person-focused logic in the controller, not inside the Auth.create method.

This activity involves pairs of students working together to create codes and then separating from one another to communicate those codes over a distance. Ideally student pairs will stand across the room from one another, but you may need to modify depending on your classroom.

Early on when writing The Chef's Secret, I knew that I had two stories to tell, that of Bartolomeo Scappi in the past, and that of his nephew and apprentice, Giovanni, in the present. Giovanni came into possession of journals and letters which told him the big secrets of his uncle's past.

But in the spirit of writing a good story, I couldn't have Giovanni just sit down and read the journals and find out the secrets. I had to make it hard for him. Fortunately, one of the things I discovered about that period in time, was that code was a little bit in vogue.

Today we think of secret codes being meant for military purposes, but in the late middle ages and through the Renaissance, it was used in all walks of life. It was a way for citizens to keep their thoughts private, for lovers to be discreet, and for powerful families to keep their machinations top secret.

Which made my decision to code Bartolomeo's journal a happy circumstance. It fit the period in time, was historically interesting, and also happened to serve the plot of the story well. It also turned out that one of the great cryptologists of the time, Giovan Battista Bellaso was alive at the same time as Scappi, and it is possible they both worked for Cardinal Ridolfo Pio da Carpi. While I didn't make extensive use of that last fact, I did include Bellaso in a scene where he gives Giovanni the information he might need to break the codes mentioned in the journal. Scappi begins using an Alberti cipher wheel for his code, then, as he aged and the secrets in his journal became darker, he eventually switches to the code that Bellaso devises. Giovanni needed to know how to decipher both.

Next I had to figure out the coded passages. Putting the passages into code was tedious and not terribly easy. Plus, Bartolomeo was writing in Italian, so I felt it important to write it first in Italian, then code it. Fortunately there are a great number of resources online that are available, including a site that helps you decipher several different types of code.

That is a pretty nice idea, however a bit offcourse. What i exactly wanted is, there is a input upon signing up, where you need to enter a code to continue registration. There would be 1 code, that would be given out to trusted members of the community i am hosting, for example discord. The code would be there to prevent random people accessing the website.

Glad it worked out. Just keep in mind as to if the data is obscured or not. (Ie. would someone with a moderate understanding of coding know how to uncover the access code). The current method is still fairly open. (If you privately provide a link to your live application, I can show you what I mean).

My idea is that, when someone registers, i will manually change the access code to avoid any website leaks, as the website i am making is for a community, in which only selected people will get access to it.
If you are interested, i can still privately send you the link to the website.
