Short story: Last Tuesday at the
bike warehouse was busy - Mr.Fish was directing two Hbg High students, two city
bikers, two bike club members on how he wanted things rearranged and
cleaned at the warehouse when I arrived - I hurriedly changed clothes and
started following orders like the others - when it was suitable for him and the
dust settled - I then started directing who would strip bikes, who was fixing
bikes, and whatever else needed done.
Phil Goldinger ( a bike club member ) showed up and
asked what to do. Just then 4 city boys showed up with bike problems and I said
"Take care of them". The 1st boy had a comfort bike with no brakes front or rear
and a broken frame - I thought at first it would be scrap the bike - but I
looked in our frame pile and we had an exact bike frame with good brakes and
a beautiful paint finish - I yelled "bike swap" - and we proceeded to swap
wheels, derailleur, etc.- in process we taught how to use a chain tool ( one of
the homeless volunteers was really impressed ) - then Phil finished the assembly
with the young biker's help
The big moment was watching Phil's satisfaction as
he watched the happy biker pedal away down the street.
