This message received today from Dani Simons
Hello all,
Leah asked me to reach out to you all to save the date for June 3rd.
We will be co-hosting an event with our partners at Livable City and
also the City of San Francisco to celebrate the 5th anniversary of
Sunday Streets. We also have world-reknown livable streets expert Gil
Peñalosa, Executive Director of 8-80 Cities, in town. The event will
happen at the end of a Sunday Streets in the Mission, a hugely popular
and fun route, so it's a great chance to come into SF and experience
that if you haven't already too!
For those of you not familiar with Gil, a little background. As
Bogotá’s Commissioner of Parks, Sport and Recreation in the late
1990s, Gil revamped the Ciclovia program, transforming into an
internationally recognized weekly program which attracts over 1.3
million to people walk, run, skate and bike along 75 miles of Bogotá’s
city streets. Today he is an international leader in creating great
cities through active public spaces.
We're going to be inviting local Sunday Streets partners, city
officials from SF, and we'd also love to invite you and regional city/
county leaders, hoping that we can inspire some other cities to create
similar events.
To that end, can I also ask you to take a look at our draft invite
list and if you know there's a city or town near you that's
contemplating a Sunday Streets-esque event, can you make sure we're
inviting any key players that would be good to get to come take a look
at our model and also get fired up by Gil (and hopefully our Mayor as
well, we are 85% sure at this point that he'll be speaking)?
I know it's not a lot of time but if you can get me any additions by
Friday I'd greatly appreciate it. We are trying to get our Mayor's
office to send out the invites, so it will be more official/formal.
Thanks in advance, and if you have any questions let me know. You'll
get a more formal invite soon!
Best,
Dani
