Burlingame is about to restripe
California Drive between Burlingame and Millbrae to upgrade its bike facility.
A couple of interesting design elements.
- One is "Door Zone" bike stencils. I've never seen that before and curious how it'll work.
- Another is 'bike-friendly grate' designs. I still don't know what it means but can take a photo once done. Doing this allows the city to convert an existing 8' shoulder area that has two large grates to a 5' bike lane with bike-friendly grates.
- Another is one-way Bike Blvd stencils on a narrow two-way street. Never seen that before either.
- There's a section where the northbound bike lane is only 5.5' but the southbound bike lane is 8' plus a 6' buffer = 14' total. I wish they could have shifted a foot from one side to the other.
This is info for people who use this key north-south San Mateo bike route. The City is no longer taking input and is prepared to stripe in August. Will share photos when done. It's a pretty big deal and investment of $450K on a well-used, inhospitable corridor between Millbrae Bart/Caltrain and Broadway in Burlingame.
