Cyclists:
We have an opportunity to improve safety for cyclists and others through west Menlo Park on the segment of Santa Cruz Ave between
Alameda de las Pulgas and the Sand Hill intersection. This segment of Santa Cruz Avenue is the road that connects
Alameda de las Pulgas in Menlo Park with Junipero Serra in Stanford and Alpine Rd:
However, to do this, cyclists need to voice their opinion and importantly, establish that
there is a significant demand for better and safer cycling accommodation for this short segment of roadway.
San Mateo County is conducting a survey of all users of this corridor and I believe that cyclists need to be well
represented. That survey can be found at:
It is my opinion that a "lane diet" is needed from Avy (ie The Dutch Goose) all the way to Sandhill. That is, one
lane needs to be removed in order to provide bike lanes. In addition, vehicle lane widths need to be reduced to help
lower vehicle speeds. Although you may have noticed the recent installation of sharrows and the "official" reduction
in speed limit to 25 mph, these two items, although helpful, don't fully improve cycling safety.
It is important that you fill in the survey BEFORE Sunday, Sept 23, 2018
For those who want more background, here are a few links.
Ultimately, the above reference the County website which has a lot of detail
In addition, check out the university park website;
Please feel free to distribute to other bike lists.
