Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help figure out whether bike facilities can be included with either the maintenance projects listed below or as a capital improvement project.

Best Regards,

Robert Davidson

Could any of these include adding bike lanes or striping?

Note that I am talking about the importance of Hausman as a bicycle corridor tonight at the Bicycle Mobility Advisory Committee meeting and would really like to include information about what the right approach would be to get bicycle related improvements on the schedule.

Ms. Cruz,

How can we follow the planning of the Fredricksburg Rd project and get Hausman Road queued up for the next round of projects?

My understanding is that Abigail Kinnison resigned from the Bicycle Coordinator position in July 2008. The city posted an opening in January 2009, but has not selected any of the candidates or reposted. Is she really the right person to contact?

Thanks,

Robert

From: Abigail Kinnison
Subject: RE: Hausman Road Development

As committed by the passage of the Bicycle Master Plan (Ordinance 100741 - April 21, 2005), the San Antonio City Council committed to consider the provision of bicycle facilities (see attached Bicycle Facility Design Guide for definitions) for every planned roadway project.  This includes roadway construction and maintenance projects as well as opportunities for re-striping of roadways.  Every capital improvement project is considered for the provision of bicycle facilities at the time the project is scoped.  In the case that bicycle facilities cannot be accommodated for the reason of cost or limited right-of-way, justification should be discussed and documented for future reference.  In addition, every accommodation shall be made to identify, list and not preclude opportunities for future bicycle facilities, should additional funding become available.

It is not realistic to add bicycle facilities to every roadway however; priority shall be given to roadways that are located along a recommend bicycle corridor (map included in the BMP).  Or that meet one or more of the following criteria:
•       Proximity to a current or funded bicycle facility, and providing connection
•       Proximity to a VIA Transit Route
•       Proximity to a school or university
•       Proximity to a park (especially those that include bicycle recreation opportunities) or linear creekway
•       Proximity to a library or community center
•       Proximity to shopping centers

As your letter thoughtfully suggests, Hausman Road does fit many, if not all, of these priority criteria.  Unfortunately it is not currently slated for any improvements.  Another goal of the BMP is:
Institutionalize Bicycling in San Antonio.  One of the objectives to achieving that goal is establish a full time bicycle coordinator.  Abigail Kinnison of the Public Works Department has filled that position since March 2005.  If you have further questions regarding the Bicycle Master Plan you may contact her directly at 207-3971.

Christina,

Many thanks for you time this morning! Please send me information on the plans for Hausman Road and Medical Center improvements. If you would reply all so that the information arrives at my home address as well, I would appreciate it.

As soon as I get this information I will add it (or links to it) on BikeNWSanAntonio, the Google group I am setting up to disseminate information. The current map looks like this: http://tinyurl.com/hausman

Christy,

Thanks for the information. I heard at the Leon Creekway opening yesterday that Hausman was on a priority list but didn't make it onto the 2007-2012 Bond Program. According to the minutes of the Streets & Sidewalks Committee there may be more details about the cost and project. Who would I contact to find out more about the proposal?

Thanks,

Robert Davidson

Christy,

This section of Hausman is not wide enough for bike lanes.  This type of project would have to be included when Hausman is widen, which I don't know when that will be.

Hi Christina,

The original Hausman project, which was on the prioritized list but
never on the recommended list, was to reconstruct and widen Hausman
from IH10 to Loop 1604 at a cost estimate of $40.9M. The Committee
reviewed several other projects as alternatives to the recommended and
prioritized lists. Staff was asked by the committee to provided Level
II estimates for these projects (Listing of Additional Projects for
the Streets and Sidewalks Committee) before, during or after the
meetings. Among those cost estimating requests was to consider
phasing Hausman Rd:

* Hausman Reconstruction Ph 1 (Loop 1604 to E. of Roadrunner way):
$14.419M
* Hausman Reconstruction Ph 2 (E. of Roadrunner way to W. of
Langston): $14.620M
* Hausman Reconstruction Ph 1 (W. of Langston to IH10): $13.717M

The projects were to reconstruct and widen their stretch of Hausman to
include drainage, sidewalks and upgraded traffic signals.

The Committee did not select any of these projects for their final
recommendation list. Council did not select any of these projects for
their final recommendation lists.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks!
