Hi all,

Once again, thank you for supporting the Bike MS: Suncoast Challenge! This ride is now in its second year in Sarasota, so we are learning the area and finding new things. I wanted to make sure all the appropriate updates were disseminated at once, as we have some volunteers from Sarasota’s ARES/RACES group who are helping us this year that aren’t in the mailing list.

Rest Stop Locations and Identifiers – This is a list of the rest stops, along with their coordinates, for the ride. The original list provided to me used a numbering system for the rest stops, but the final literature and route maps use letter identifiers. Please take note of your rest stop’s letter identifier. Attached are the rest stop layout maps, along with the route maps. I have also attached the map that Dana sent out, known as the “pretty” map. The turn by turns can be found on the MS website: https://events.nationalmssociety.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=cms.page&id=8499&eventID=2048#accordion-tab-2-active

APRS – The command post relies heavily on APRS for mobile unit location to identify closest units to SAG pickups and priority calls. Many operators are already beaconing APRS via RF, and if so, we just need your APRS ID. Please provide it to Mike (mi...@slbservicesgroup.com) so he can have it on his map.

For those using APRS in your vehicles, I will be broadcasting the locations of where Law Enforcement should be stationed for the event from the command post. Just use Shriek “!2025SC!” and you will be able to see them. If you click on the icon, in the comments field I placed the times they are supposed to be on location. The net control location for briefing will also be broadcasted.

Ideally, all mobile units will be tracking on APRS, even if we cheat APRS. There are app options for APRS. I use APRS TX for iPhone and APRSdroid for Android. These are the best options for phone tracking. The command post will be using APRSIS32 which will get both RF and IP based tracking.

Event SOPs – Mike sent out the SOPs which include mobile and SAG SOP and net procedures. I am attaching them again for your convenience, including a correction to the net SOP about there being two nets. Please review and let Mike or I know if you have any questions.

Sweep/Final Rider – A SAG unit will be assigned as the sweep vehicle, who will follow the last rider and make sure the course is clear. The sweep vehicle is the only vehicle who is designated to determine when the last rider has come through. In this instance, do not take it from law enforcement. SAG 1 will be the primary sweep vehicle this year, and we will swap him out with coverage as needed.

Frequency Plan – I updated the IC 205 and we have removed the VHF repeaters that I added from the Sarasota ARES/RACES group. The command post will be operating with UHF only. The command post will have loaner NXDN radios to offer to mobile and rest stop units that need it. Mobile units can pick one up at roll call at 0630. Rest stop operators who would like to use one can pick one up from the command post at the same time, or we can arrange one delivered if coverage is an issue.

Assignment Roster: Below is the assignment roster with report times. Please note that we hope not to be on the course as long as the times are slated, but operational times may vary. Rest stops will close once the last confirmed rider has come through. SAG units will be cleared from the event on a rolling basis given the number of riders that remain on the course. We won’t keep everyone out there until the bitter end.
