Wonder if anyone has converted one of these to a hand flashlight or bike light? Would be nice to find at least an optics shell that one of these drops into to experiment with.

The 1 watt Luxeons are pretty neat critters! You can buy a version
that comes with the large plastic lens (shown at the bottom of the
page). I bought one, originally hoping it might make a good bike
light, but it turned out to have a wider beam than what is suitable
for a dynamo light. On the other hand, it does make a nice flashlight!
The full datasheet is at www.lumileds.com , I believe.
There are actually a number of kits available for installing one of
these in Maglites and such. www.inretech.com sells a reasonable kit
of this type.
There are also 5 watt Luxeons that are becoming available. With the
right optics, these have a lot of potential for bike lights!
Steve Kurt
for less.
The 5 watt Luxeon Star makes a nice headlight for lower speeds or a saftey light.

There are new, narrower-beam optics available. They produce a central
hot spot with some illumination around it. I think these will be
better for bike lighting.
Look at:
http://elektrolumens.com/BLASTER/Blaster_II_Optics.html
Wayne's selling these (for a hefty $8 each, but they're nice).
I think they may be from Lumidrives.
